(Columbia, Ky.) The Golden Eagles had to turn around and play St. Xavier in an elimination game after defeating William Penn. The teams went scoreless over the first inning but the Cougars got on the board in the top of the third inning. The Cougars scored on an error and a couple of hits to take a 2-0 lead. Cornerstone got a couple of infield singles (Castillo and Pasciak) but stranded the runners in the bottom of the third inning. St. Xavier extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Cornerstone made an error and then got a couple of singles to score their first run. They scored the 2nd and 3rd runs on a wild pitch and a base loaded walk. The Golden Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but failed to get anyone home. The Cougars exploded for four more runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning to make it 9-0 Megan Nonnemacher retired the side in order and the game ended after six innings with a St. Xavier 9-0 win. Cornerstone ends the season with a 26-18 record.
The Golden Eagles faced a much different pitcher today and their bats came to life. Jenna Weightman drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a balk. Megan Oberst stepped up and hit a single to right field to score Weightman to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. The Statesmen tied the game 1-1 in the bottom half of the first inning on a couple of hits. Cornerstone got right back to work in the top of the second inning. Rachel Bode drew a two-out walk and Hailey Castillo followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Jenna Weightman got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lauren Pasciak reached on an error and Bode and Castillo both scored. Weightman advanced to 3rd on the play and scored on a Heidi Walburg single to make it 4-1 Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles added another in the third inning. Alexsandra Szajna singled and Rachel Bode followed her with a double to left field to give Cornerstone a 5-1 lead. William Penn got a couple of runs back in the bottom of the fthird inning on a four hits to make it 5-3. Cornerstone got two more runs in the top of the fourth playing small ball. Jenna Weightman walked and Lauren Pasciak followed with a fielder's choice and both runners were safe. Both runners moved up on a Heidi Walburg ground out. Megan Oberst hit s single to bring Weightman home. Pasciak then scored on a Ashley Niedermayer bunt to make it 7-3. The Statesman pulled one back in the bottom of the fourth on a SAC Fly to make it 7-4. Rachel Bode led off with a solo homer to make it 8-1 after the fifth and Cornerstone added another in the seventh with consecutive singles by Hailey Castillo, Lauren Paciak, and Heidi Walburg (RBI) to make it 9-4 and Walburg would seal the win with a scoreless seventh inning. Cornerstone advanced to play St. Xavier (a 1-0 loser to host Lindsey Wilson) at 5:15 p.m.
(Columbia, Ky.) (Columbia, Ky.) The Golden Eagles opened play today at the Lindsey Wilson Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round games and fell 3-1 to top seed St. Xavier. Both teams went 3 up – 3 down in the first inning. Cornerstone did the same in the top of the second inning. The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the second without a hit. They scored on a combination of walks, wild pitches, and fielder's choice's. Rachel Bode drew a walk to lead off the third but ended up stranded at 2nd base to end the inning. The Cougars did not reach base in the bottom half of the inning. The Golden Eagles continued to struggle at the plate against St. Xavier's Nicole Nonnemacher failing to reach base again in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cougar's got a runner on in the bottom of the inning on an error but stranded her without a hit. The Golden Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ashley Niedermayer got an infield single to lead off the inning and advanced to 2nd base on a balk by Nonnemacher. Alexsandra followed with a single to left and Niedermayer scored on an error by the left fielder to make it 2-1. Cornerstone would get runners to 2nd and 3rd but could not get them home. Walburg continued to be tough from the circle retiring the side in order in the bottom of the fifth and maintaining a no-hitter through five. Heidi Walburg drew a walk in the top of the sixth but the Golden Eagles flied out three times to leave her stranded at 1st base. The Cougars got their first hit of the game on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to give them a 3-1 lead. Rachel Nelson got a two out hit in the bottom of the seventh but the Golden Eagles would pop up to end the game. Heidi Walburg took the loss with a 1-hitter. Cornerstone will play William Penn (a 14-0 loser to host Lindsey Wilson) at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles will play their NAIA Opening Round game today at 6:00 p.m. EDT. Cornerstone is the #4 Seed in the Lindsey Wilson Bracket and will open up against #1 St.Xavier (Ill.). Cornerstone lost 1-0 in 8 innings to the Cougars on their last game of their Florida trip back on March 8th. The Cougars finished the season with a 45-7 record. Cornerstone found out their draw for their Opening Round game in the NAIA Tournament today. They will play Saint Xavier (Ill.) in the first game of the double elimination Lindsey Wilson Bracket played in Columbia, Ky. Cornerstone is the 4th seed in the bracket and Saint Xavier is the 1st seed. 2nd seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) will play the 3rd seed William Penn (Iowa) in the first game. It is a double elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the 10 team NAIA World Series which will be played in Columbus, Ga. William Penn will play host Lindsey Wilson at 3:00 p.m. ET and Cornerstone will play Saint Xavier at 6:00 p.m. ET.
