GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Pitching dominated on another cold windy day, as Cornerstone fell to Olivet Nazarene 3-1 in the second and final game of the fall season. The Golden Eagles allowed eight hits in the seven-inning contest, but failed to get the bats going as both pitchers moved quickly through the opposing lineups. Cornerstone closes out the fall portion of their regular season at 0-2.
Grand Rapids, Mich. – The season opener did not go Cornerstone's way as they fell 6-3 at home to Olivet Nazarene on a cool and windy night at DeWitt Field. Cornerstone mustered up nine hits but left the bases loaded two times early while three errors in the field allowed ONU to take an early lead. CU will play a second game against the Tigers Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time since re-starting the baseball program in 2012, the Cornerstone Golden Eagles have a former player in the professional ranks. Luke Heller recently signed a contract with the Copperheads of the Ozarks Pro Baseball League in Missouri. Heller led the 2015 team in ERA at 1.94 in a team high 79.0 innings.
HICKORY, N.C. - Ben Sheckler (JR/Sparta, Mich.) had a breakout season on the mound for the Golden Eagles this past spring and he has carried that momentum into his summer league competition in the Carolina Virginia Collegiate League where he was just named to the All-Star Team. Sheckler, who plays for Catawba Valley, was also recently named the Pitcher of the Week for the league.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Head baseball coach Dave Mitroff is pleased to announce the addition of Casey Fisk to the coaching staff beginning immediately. Fisk, who played his college ball at NCAA DI Illinois State and now runs Fisk Performance Training here in Grand Rapids, will serve as the hitting coach for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone is coming off its most successful season since re-starting the program in 2013 as they posted a 26-31 overall record.
