Cornerstone volleyball team faced Saint Ambrose University and (RV) Trinity Christian College during day one of the Trinity Christian/Saint Xavier Tournament. The Golden Eagle squad defeated both teams in four sets to start the season with a 2-0 record.
During the first match of the night, the Golden Eagles defeated Saint Ambrose (25-21, 25-22, 19-25, and 25-20) led by Heather Green with 21 kills. Johanna Egerer and Cailie Johnson had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Amber Carmean accumulated 22 digs followed by 14 digs from Green. Hope Leppink had 57 assists. Libby Webber, Cailie Johnson, and Leppink finished with 1.5 blocks each.
In the second match of the day Cornerstone took on the home team (RV) Trinity Christian College. Cornerstone won in four sets (25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21). Both Johnson and Green had 13 Kills while Megan Newhouse and Maria Ma added 10 kills in the match. Leppink dished out 41 assists to aid in the victory while Amber Carmean lead the team with 19 digs.
The Golden Eagles will face No. 10 Lindsey Wilson at 1 a.m (EST) and Roosevelt University at 3 p.m. (EST) tomorrow at St. Xavier University.
AMBER CARMEAN – Fruitport High School/Muskegon Community College
Amber Carmean is a 5'5" Libero from Fruitport, Michigan. She attended Fruitport High School and graduated in 2012. After Fruitport, Amber decided to continue her volleyball career at Muskegon Community College where she was a team captain.
While at Fruitport, she contributed to the Trojans back-to-back State Championships in 2010 and 2011. She was also named 2nd Team All-State as a senior. Academically, Amber maintained a 4.0 GPA, was the Vice President of National Honors Society, received all-A Honor Roll every year, and also received All-Conference Honors in both softball and basketball.
After Fruitport, Amber completed her freshman and sophomore years at Muskegon Community College where she broke every defensive record and was named 1st Team All-Conference. She helped her team to a State Runner Up award and Regional Runner Up award. Amber was on the President's list and the Dean's List at MCC.
Amber has a very large and supportive family. Her parents Bryan and Laura have five kids: Heather (24), Cody (22), Amber, Jason (16) and Kailey (12). They attend Kainay Community Church in Muskegon. Amber is very excited to attend Cornerstone because she loves the atmosphere and loves the idea of attending a Christian School where she can strengthen her Christian values and also make wonderful relationships with her Christian teammates. In her free time, Amber enjoys coaching both her club team at Inside Out Volleyball and also her 7th grade team at Fruitport Middle School. She also enjoys being outside, spending time with her family, and watching her younger siblings compete in sports just like she did.
MARIA MA – West Michigan Christian High School/ Inside Out Volleyball
Maria Ma is a 6'2" Right Side Hitter from Shanghai, China. The last three years of High School she attended Western Michigan Christian in Muskegon, MI. Maria received All-State, All-Region, All-Area and All-Conference honors. In 2013, she was a team captain and recorded 937 total kills (2nd All-Time). Maria played at Inside-Out Volleyball Club. Before coming to the United States, Maria played at LiGuoJun Volleyball Club for 6 years. She was awarded by the local government the top honor, "Excellent Athlete" and won the Shanghai Games Championship.
Maria's parents are Weiqian Peng and Aiguo Ma. She also has had three host families—the Vanhekkens, the Swinburnes and the Hallenbecks. Maria and her host family attend Ferrysbury Community Church. Maria is an indoor person; she likes to read and play Zheng (a traditional Chinese instrument) and is an assistant coach for Western Michigan Middle School Volleyball. Maria is excited for the opportunity to get her degree at Cornerstone.
ABBY CARLSON – Rockford High School/ Dead Frog-Far Out Volleyball Club
Abby Carlson is a 5'10" Setter from Rockford High School in Rockford, MI. During her senior year, Abby was a team captain and received All-State, All-Region, and All-Conference honors. She was also selected both Individual and Team All-Academic. Abby was a member in National Honors Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes throughout her high school years. Abby competed at the National level for Dead Frog/Far Out.
Abby enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her parents are Jon and Laura Carlson and she has a younger sister, Morgan (15) and a younger brother, Nathan (14). Abby is looking forward to experiencing college at a Christ-centered campus where she will be surrounded by fellow believers. She plans to major in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Spanish. She would like to thank her friends and family for all they have done to make her the lady she is today.
ELLIE VAN LAAR – Hudsonville High School/ Impact Dynamic Volleyball Club
Ellie Van Laar is a 6'0" Middle Hitter from Hudsonville High School in Hudsonville, MI. During her senior year, she was a team captain and received All-State, All-Region, All-Area and All-Conference honors. Ellie also played club at Impact Dynamic.
Family is the most important thing in Ellie's life, along with her faith in God. Her parents - Dan and Julie, her younger brother - Adam (16), her grandparents - Carl and Ruth Bush and her Uncle Craig have been incredibly supportive throughout her volleyball career. Ellie's family attends New Life Baptist Church. Ellie feels blessed for the opportunity to attend Cornerstone next fall where she can be surrounded by fellow Christians on the volleyball court, as well as on campus. Ellie plans to major in Business Administration and minor in Graphic Design. Ellie is excited to be a part of the incoming student-athletes for 2014 and looks forward to her future playing volleyball as a Golden Eagle, and working towards a degree at Cornerstone.
