Cornerstone University and head baseball coach David Mitroff are pleased to announce the signing of Seth Ritsema, a middle infielder, from Calvin Christian High School in Grandville, Mich. Seth hit .382 with an on-base-percentage of .520 and scored 31 runs this year. He was named 2nd Team All-State for his performance this season.
When asked about choosing Cornerstone University Seth said, "I chose to attend Cornerstone because I had an awesome opportunity to play college baseball, and also stay close to home. Another reason I chose the University is because it allows me to excel in the business field while being surrounded by other Christian believers."
Coach David Mitroff said, "We are excited to add Seth Ritsema to our program. We believe he can make an impact early on in his time here with his defense and his ability to handle the bat. Seth comes from a great program and his leadership ability will be an asset on campus."
The Cornerstone University baseball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader with Madonna University today in Grand Rapids, Mich. on the final day of the season. The Golden Eagles fell in extra innings 11-9 in game one and beat Madonna 3-2 in game two.
Cornerstone starter Jon Knapp allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings pitched. Relief pitcher Justin Geerts suffered the loss after pitching well in the final five innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks.
The Cornerstone offense was led by Zach Bohl who went 4-5 with a single, a double, a triple, and two RBI and Zach Harbison who was 4-6 with a double and a run scored. Evan Wagner was 3-5 with a triple, three runs, and three RBI.
While game one was an offensive battle, game two was decided on pitching. Cornerstone starter Luke Heller allowed two runs in the first inning and shut down the Madonna offense after that. He pitched into the 6th inning and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Ryan Harris came on in relief to earn the win pitching 1.2 shutout innings.
Evan Wagner stayed hot in the second game with two hits including a solo, opposite-field homerun. Nick Covello added two hits, one run, and the game winning RBI. Covello hit an infield single to drive in Sonny Mastromatteo in the bottom of the 6th inning.
The split puts the final Cornerstone overall record at 15-28 and 4-22 in the WHAC.
The Cornerstone University baseball team lost a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) game to Madonna University today by a score of 8-5.
Cornerstone starter Brandon Willard suffered the loss after struggling with command. He pitched 3.1 innings in which he allowed six runs, all earned, on four hits and six walks. Both Kyle Marburger and Paul Freswick were effective in relief.
The Cornerstone offense went ahead 3-0 early and had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to complete the comeback late. Zach Meyer was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Johnny Abbadusky also went 2-3. Dillon Reust and Tom Enslen each added two hits.
The loss moves the Cornerstone overall record to 14-27 and 3-21 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will host Madonna again tomorrow for a doubleheader and senior day festivities beginning at 1:00.
The Cornerstone University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader today against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opponent Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind. by scores of 14-10 and 8-3.
Starter Jon Knapp suffered the hard luck loss in game one after allowing seven runs, two earned, in five innings of work.
Cornerstone was led on offense in the first game by Travis Gordon and Sonny Mastromatteo. Gordon was 3-5 with a homerun, four runs scored and two RBI. Mastromatteo was 4-5 with an RBI. Zach Bohl was 2-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Davis Martin was also 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Game two starter Taylor Cooper got roughed up for the first time this year and was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits and five walks in 2.1 innings. Paul Freswick was excellent in relief. Freswick allowed one run on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Travis Gordon and Nick Covello led the Cornerstone offense in game two. Gordon hit a mammoth homerun to right and drove in two runs. Covello hit a line drive home over the right field fence a few innings later. Harry Karlsen added a double in the loss.
The losses move the Cornerstone overall record to 14-26 and 3-20 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will host WHAC opponent Madonna on Thursday.
