GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Head coach Ryan Campbell and his Golden Eagles finished the week with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Lourdes University as CU won going away 25-20, 25-23, 25-15. The victory lifts Cornerstone to 14-5 on the year and 5-3 in league action as they will host Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
After picking up a 3-0 win over Indiana Tech on Friday night, the volleyball team carried the momentum into Saturday to post a sweep of Lourdes. It was the first meeting against the Gray Wolves since they upset CU in the WHAC tourney a year ago.Cornerstone controlled the play on offense and defense as they limited the visitors to a dismal -.043 hitting percentage highlighted by 11 team blocks by the Golden Eagles.
CU was paced on offense by 11 kills from Megan Newhouse while Heather Green and Cailie Schultz each finished with four. Chelsea Lake (11) and Hope Leppink (8) combined for 19 assists while Amber Carmean had nine digs.
CU will stay at home on Wednesday and host Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m.
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) Cornerstone hosted Indiana Tech tonight and swept the Warriors 25-12, 26-24, and 25-19. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-12 victory highlighted by 4 Service Aces by Murphy Heyer. The second set was much closer with Indiana Tech leading most of the set. Their biggest lead came at 19-15 but the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. Tech tied it at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, and 24-24 before Cornerstone scored the last two points to win the set 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead. Indiana Tech started out well in the 3rd set jumping out to a 10-6 lead but the Golden Eagles made a 10-2 run to take a 16-12. The Golden Eagles kept the Warriors at a distance for the remainder of the set and ended up winning 25-19 to sweep the Warriors in 3 sets. Cornerstone improves to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in WHAC play. Cornerstone will return to action tomorrow when they take on Lourdes at 1:00 p.m.
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles started well today against the Panthers. The two teams battled back and forth over the first part of the game and were tied at 9-9. Cornerstone made a 3-0 run with kills by Heather Green, Tori Mielke, and Cailie Schultz. The Golden Eagles would lead until the Panthers tied it at 17-17. Cornerstone would take the lead again only to be tied at 21-21. 22-22, and 23-23 before Davenport made a couple of errors in the last two points and Cornerstone won 25-23.
Davenport came out right of the first point and built a big lead early in the second set and they went on to win 25-14. The third set was much the same as the second set with Davenport winning 25-10.
Cornerstone would take and early lead in the fourth set and would go up as many as 6 points (13-7) but then the Panthers rallied to tie the score at 15-15. Davenport then took over and increased their lead to 20-16 over the next six points. Cornerstone would get to within 2 points 24-22 but the Panthers would finish off the last point with a kill to win the game and match for Davenport.
Cornerstone drops to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will return to action this Friday and Saturday when the host Indiana Tech on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Lourdes on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
(Bourbonnais, Ill) The Golden Eagles opened play at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament hosted by Olivet Nazarene University. Cornerstone defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 3-0 in their first match. Maria Ma led the Golden Eagles with 10 Kills. Chelsea Lake had 18 Assists and Libby Webber had 10 Assists for Cornerstone. Megan Newhouse led the team with 13 Digs. Murphy Heyer and Maria Ma both had 2.5 Blocks.
Cornerstone returned in the afternoon to take on #5 Columbia College. The Golden Eagles lost the first set 25-23 but then won 25-13, 25-21, and 25-20 to win the match 3-1. Cailie Schultz and Ellie Van Laar led Cornerstone with 11 and 9 Kills respectively. Megan Newhouse and Chelsea Lake had 18 and 12 Digs. Libby Webber led the team with 3.5 Blocks. Heather Green had 2 Service Aces for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone improves to 10-3 on the season. Cornerstone will play Grand View (Ia.) and Trinity Christian (Ill.) tomorrow.
The Golden Eagles travelled down to Detroit and defeated Marygrove 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) today to improve to 3-1 in the WHAC. Megan Newhouse led the Golden Eagles attack with 13 Kills. Four other Golden Eagles (Murphy Heyer, Heather Green, Cailie Schultz, and Tori Mielke) had at least 7 Kills in the match. Hope Leppink had 39 Assists in the game. Three Golden Eagles (Megan Newhouse, Heather Green, and Murphy Heyer) had 8 Digs each. Megan Newhouse and Tori Mielke both had 4 Blocks for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone improves to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in WHAC play. Cornerstone will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Adrian to play Siena Heights at 7:00 p.m.
