(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) - The men's soccer team opened up their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate today with a 0-0 draw against rival Aquinas College. The fifth overtime match for the team this season ended in a draw for the first time as they are now 2-5-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in league play. CU will return home Wednesday to face Siena Heights at 7 p.m.

Aquinas came into the match as one of the top scoring teams in the country led by Aldony Mendez who ranks second individually with 13 goals but it was the CU defense that stepped up.

Nick Hopkins led the Golden Eagles with 6 saves (2 of which came in the 2nd OT) in between the posts.

The Golden Eagles did finish the day with 6 shots (3 from Gareth Flynn) while Aquinas had 6 total shots on goal.

Cornerstone will look for their first conference win when they host Siena Heights on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  That will be "Night of Nets" for the men's soccer team.  A suggested donation of $6 will purchase one bed net to send to Africa.  Click here to see more information.

The Golden Eagles traveled down to Goshen to take on the Maple Leafs tonight at 7:00 p.m. and they came home with their second victory of the season.  Senior Chris Buitenhuis scored his second goal of his career and second game in a row to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the 73rd minute of play.  Buitenhuis headed in a Tristan Esprit corner kick for the game winner.  Sophomore Gareth Flynn added an insurance goal in the 86th minute to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0.  Cornerstone outshot Goshen 16-13 for the game.  Nick Hopkins picked up his 2nd win and his first shut-out of the season.  Cornerstone improves to 2-5-0 on the year.  The Golden Eagles will return to action a week from today (Sept. 27th) when they travel over to Aquinas for a 3:00 kickoff.

09/17/2014 - Men's Soccer

The Golden Eagles returned home to face St. Xavier (Ill.) tonight.  Cornerstone got on the board early when Chris Buitenhuis scored his first goal of his career in the 6th minute of play.  Tristan Esprit served a corner kick and Buitenhuis finished it in the lower right side of the goal.  The Cougars tied the score on a bicycle kick in the 15th minute of play.  The game remained tied through the remainder of regulation so the teams went into OT.  Shots were 6-6 after 90 minutes.  Cornerstone garners 3 shots to St. Xavier's 1 shot in the 1st OT and then won it 2 minutes into the 2nd OT when Caleb Colp scored his first goal of his career on a Garrett Nimmo assist.  The Golden Eagles have been on the wrong side of 3 OT games so far this season so it was nice to finally break the ice for their first win of the season.  The Golden Eagles outshot the Cougars 10-7 and had a 9-2 advantage in Corner Kicks.  Cornerstone improves to 1-5-0 on the season.  The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they play at Goshen with a 7:00 pm kickoff.

The men's soccer team returned to action today in South Bend, Ind. against Holy Cross College.  The Saints got on the scoreboard first in the 29th minute of play to go up 1-0.  Cornerstone responded in the 42nd minute on an unassisted goal by Sophomore Gareth Flynn to tie the game at 1-1 just before the half.  The Saints outshot the Golden Eagles 12-7 in the first half of play.  Holy Cross recaptured the lead in the 57th minute and went up 3-1 in the 69th minute of play on a free kick.  Cornerstone made a game of it in the 87th minute on a free kick by Kevin Nimmo for his first goal of the season.  The Golden Eagles couldn't come up with another and lost 3-2.  The Golden Eagles drop to 0-5 on the season with all the games being 1 goal losses and three of them coming in overtime.  Cornerstone will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Xavier (Ill.) at 7:00 p.m.
