(Fort Wayne, Ind.) The Golden Eagles travelled down to Fort Wayne to take on Indiana Tech today. Cornerstone got off the bus and got off to a great start. Jenna Weightman led off with a single down the left field line and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lauren Pasciak doubled to bring Weightman home and Heidi Walburg followed with another double to bring in Pasciak to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead. Cornerstone added another two in the third inning. Lauren Pasciak hit another double with two outs. Heidi Walburg hit a single to brink in Pasiak and she advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Walburg then scored on an error to make it 4-0. The Golden Eagles made it 8-0 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hailey Castillo got a two out bunt single. Jenna Weightman reached on an error and Castillo advanced to third. Lauren Pasciak singled to knock in Castillo to make it 5-0. Heidi Walburg followed her with a 3-run shot to give Cornerstone an 8-0 cushion. The Warriors loaded the bases with two outs and scored two runs with a double but Walburg got the next batted to ground out to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Walburg improved to 10-4 on the season with the win.
Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two on a Megan Oberst solo homer. The Warriors tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning on two hits and an error. The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren Pasciak hit a one out double and scored on a Heidi Walburg single. Megan Oberst singled to put runners on first and second. Abby MacArthur pinch ran for Walburg. Ashley Niedermayer singled to load the bases. MacArthur then scored on an Alexsandra Szajna sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. The Warriors responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to make it 3-2. Heidi Walburg came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning and allowed one hit but struck out two of the batters and got another to ground out to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Rachel Nelson improved to 6-5 on the season with the win. Cornerstone improved to 17-11 overall and 9-5 in the WHAC with the sweep.
Cornerstone will return to action on Monday when they travel to Holland to play Hope at 4:00 p.m.
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles had to switch their home game to Davenport to play Davenport because the field was too wet from the last couple days of wet and cold. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game one. Lauren Pasciak and Megan Oberst both drew walks to put runners on first and second base. Ashley Niedermayer hit a line shot over the left fielder's head to knock both runners in to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead. The game remained 2-0 through the fourth inning. Davenport got one back in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a couple of errors and a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Megan Oberst gave Cornerstone a little breathing room in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the center field fence. The Panthers would get their first runner on base on an error but Walburg got the next batter to ground out and the next two to pop out to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone improved to 15-10 overall and 7-4 in the WHAC Walburg improved to 9-4 from the circle.
Cornerstone didn't fare as well in game two. The Panthers scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead. The Golden Eagles got one back in the bottom of the first. Lauren Pasciak and Heidi Walburg both hit singles and Megan Oberst walked to load the bases. Ashley Niedermayer hit a SAC Fly to the right fielder to bring Pasciak across the plate to make it 5-1. The Panthers got another in the top of the fourth inning and then they exploded for 7 runs in the top of the sixth. Cornerstone did not score in the bottom half of the game and the game was ended after six innings with a 13-1 lost for the Golden Eagles. Rachel Nelson dropped to 5-6 with the loss and Cornerstone dropped to 15-11 overall and 7-5 in WHAC play.
Cornerstone will hit the road to play Indiana Tech on Saturday for a 1:00 start.
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles hosted Siena Heights today and they got started early. Jenna Weightman led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a Lauren Pasciak ground out. Heidi Walburg the hit a two run shot off of the top of the left field fence to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead. The Saints cut the lead in half with a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning to make it 2-1. Neither team would score over the last three innings of the game. Cornerstone would go on to win 2-1 just before the rain hit. Heidi Walburg improved to 8-4 on the season.
Cornerstone would get it going early again in game two. Jenna Weightman led off with another single in game 2 and then stole second and third base. Megan Oberst drew a walk and Ashley Niedermayer drove in both runners with a triple to right field. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with singles by Rachel Bode, Alyssa Ambu, and Hailey Castillo to start the second inning. Bode and Ambu both scored on an error by the shortstop to give Cornerstone a 4-0 lead. Megan Oberst brought Weightman home with a single to center field and Pasciak scored on a wild pitch to give Cornerstone a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Golden Eagles scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on consecutive doubles by Jenna Weightman and Lauren Paskiak to give Cornerstone and 8-0 lead after three innings. Rachel Nelson would blank the Saints for the last two innings to preserve the shutout for the Golden Eagles to improve to 4-5 on the year. Cornerstone improves to 14-10 on the season and Coach Jim Farrell wins his 300th game as the head coach of the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host league leader (9-1) Davenport at 3:30 p.m.
Golden Eagles sweep the Saints
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles had to go on the road today but they didn't have to travel far as they played Aquinas. The Saints took an early lead scoring on a bases loaded balk to go up 1-0 after one inning. Megan Oberst knotted the game a 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a solo shot to lead off the inning. Cornerstone would strand a couple of runners to end the inning tied 1-1. Cornerstone would go deep again to lead off the fifth with a Jenna Weightman shot and Lauren Pasciak would follow her with another solo shot and the Golden Eagles went up 3-1. The Golden Eagles would extend their lead in the top of the sixth. Emily Bode singled to lead off the inning. Hailey Castillo reached on an error and pinch runner Julayne Brigham scored. Jenna Weight got hit by a pitch and Heidi Walburg hit a 3-run shot to give Cornerstone a 7-1 lead. Heidi Walburg would retire the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win and improve to 7-4 on the season.
The Saints would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game two on a couple of singles and an RBI ground out. The Golden Eagles claimed the lead in the top of the third inning. Rachel Bode singled to center and advanced to second on a Hailey Castillo ground out. Bode scored on a Lauren Pasciak single and Pasciak advanced to second on the play home. Heidi Walburg then reached on an error and Pasciak scored to make it 2-1. Aquinas would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning on a SAC Fly. Neither team would score again until the top of the seventh when the Golden Eagles got 2 runs on 3 hits. Hailey Castillo led off with a single. Lauren Pasciak pushed Castilo to second with a single. Heidi Walburg drew a walk to load the bases and Megan Oberst hit a 2-run single to put Cornerstone up 4-2. Rachel Nelson closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh for the sweep. Nelson improved to 3-4 on the year. Cornerstone improved to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the WHAC.
Cornerstone will host Siena Heights on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles hosted Concordia but had to play at Davenport for the second time because their field is still not yet playable. Concordia came out of the gate fast scoring four runs in the top of the first inning on four singles and a walk. The Cardinals added another run in the top of the second to make it 5-0 but the Golden Eagles got three back in the bottom of the second on an Emily Bode three run homer to get the score to 5-3. Concordia added three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take an 11-3 lead while the Golden Eagles bats went cold and the game ended after five innings due to the "Mercy Rule".
Cornerstone started off much better in the second game. Hailey Castillo reached on an error to lead off for Cornerstone. Lauren Pasciak followed with a single and both runners advanced on a bad throw. Megan Oberst hit a ground out to score Castillo. Ashley Niedermayer knocked in Pasciak with a double. Alexsandra Szajna walked. Emily Bode brought Niedermayer home with a single and Rachel Bode followed with a double to bring Szajna home to give Cornerstone a 4-0 lead. The score remained the same until the top of the fourth inning when the bottom fell out. Concordia scored 9 runs on 7 hits and 2 errors to take a 9-4 lead after four innings. Concordia added a couple more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cornerstone got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Abby MacArthur hit a two out double and scored on a single by Maggie Vosler. The Cardinals exploded for five more runs in the top of the seventh on 4 hits and an error to go up 16-5. Ciara Wilke had a pinch hit single to lead off the seventh and advanced to second on a Megan Oberst single. She later scored on an RBI double by Jenna Weightman. Oberst then scored on a pass ball to conclude the scoring in the game. Cornerstone lost 16-7 and dropped to 10-10 overall and 2-4 in the WHAC.
Cornerstone will play at Aquinas next at 3:30 on Friday.
