(Clermont, Fla.) The Golden Eagles faced Grace College (Ind.) in their first game today. The two teams held each other scoreless through the first four innings but the Lancers broke the tie in bottom of the fourth inning scoring three runs to go up 3-0. The Golden Eagles responded with three of their own in the top of the 6th inning to tie the game at 3-3. Whitney Heasley got the Lancers out in order in the bottom half of the inning to keep the score tied. Jenna Weightman hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh to give Cornerstone a 4-3 lead and Heasley shut out the Lancers in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Heasley picked up her first win as a Golden Eagle and Cornerstone improved to 5-2.
Point Park picked up a run in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0 against Cornerstone in Game 2. The Golden Eagles responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Megan Oberst and Heidi Walburg were both hit by pitches and Emily Bode knocked them in with a double to put Cornerstone on top 2-1. Neither team scored again until the 6th inning when Heidi Walburg hit a 3-run shot and the Golden Eagles went on to score four runs to take a 6-1 lead and that would be how the game ended. Walburg picked up her 4th win of the year and Cornerstone improved to 6-2 on the year.
Cornerstone will return to action Thursday, March 6th when they take on Hannibal LaGrange and University of St. Francis (IL).
(Clermont, Fla.) The Golden Eagles faced University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in their first game today and they got off to a good start. Haley Castillo got on base with a bunt single. Heidi Walburg followed with a single to center field and moved Castillo to second base. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Megan Oberst drew a walk to load the bases. Emily Bode singled to left field to bring Castillo and Walburg home to make it 2-0 Cornerstone. Oberst and Bode advanced on a wild pitch. Alexsandra Szajna came up with two outs and hit a single to right field to bring in both Oberst and Bode to put the Golden Eagles up 4-0 after one inning. The Golden Eagles scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haley Castillo got a two out bunt single and Heidi Walburg hit a double to right field to plate Castillo to put Cornerstone up 5-0. St. Francis got one back in the top of the fifth inning to make it 5-1 and then made it interesting in the top of the seventh inning with a two out 3-run homer but Heidi Walburg struck out the next batter to seal the victory for Cornerstone. Walburg improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Golden Eagles faced Bellevue University for the second time in Florida in their second game of the day. Cornerstone exploded with nine runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Bruins 9-1 in today's game. They defeated Bellevue 1-0 in their first meeting. Megan Oberst led off the second inning with a double to left field. Emily Bode drew a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd base. Lauren Pasciak advanced the runners on a fielder's choice for the first out. Alexsandra Szajna singled to knock in Oberst and then advanced to 2nd on error while Bode moved to 3rd. Rachel Nelson grounded out and Bode scored. Abby MacArthur knocked in Szajna with a single to right field to make it 3-0. Jenna Weightman followed with an RBI triple to knock in MacArthur. Haley Castillo reached on an error and Heidi Walburg drew a walk to load the bases. Megan Oberst came up for the second time in the inning an reached on a error which scored Weightman. Emily Bode drew a walk to bring home Castillo to make it 6-0. Lauren Pasciak followed with a 3-RBI double to left field to clear the bases to give Cornerstone an 9-0 lead. Rachel Nelson threw a 2-hitter from the circle improving to 1-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season.
Cornerstone will return to action on Wednesday, March 5th when they take on Point Park (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m. and Grace College at 5:00 p.m.
(Clermont, Fla.) The Golden Eagles opened the day against Concordia College (N.Y.). Heidi Walburg got things going in the bottom of the first inning. Haley Castillo drew a walk and Walberg hit a 2-run shot over the fence to make it 2-0. Alexsandra Szajna led off the bottom of the second inning with a triple. Alyssa Ambu drew a walk and Jenna Weightman knocked them both in on a double to left field. Weightman scored the third run of the inning on a Heidi Walburg SAC fly to make it 3-0. Lauren Pasciak reached on an error and later scored on an Alyssa Ambu single. Concordia scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Heidi Walberg reached on an walk and scored on an error. Megan Oberst reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single by Lauren Pasciak to put Cornerstone up 8-0 after four innings. Both teams added a run in the 7th inning and the game ended with a 9-1 win for Cornerstone. Heidi Walburg improved to 2-0 with the win.
Jenna Weightman doubled and scored on a Heidi Walburg single in the top of the 1st inning. Concordia tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning and later took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Hannibal-LaGrange scored runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead. Cornerstone scored in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 3-2 game and that how the game would end. Rachel Nelson took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Cornerstone will return to action on Tuesday, March 4th when they take on University of St. Francis (IL) and Bellevue (Neb.) at 11:00 and 1:00 p.m.
(Clermont, Fla.) The Golden Eagles started their 2014 campaign against St. Thomas University (Fla.). St. Thomas was finishing up their trip up north for the NTC Spring games. St. Thomas had beaten WHAC member UM-Dearborn 3 times and split games with Davenport. The Bobcats pulled another one out of their hats by today by defeating Cornerstone 1-0 in 10 innings. Cornerstone drops to 0-1 on the season.
Cornerstone returned to play Bellevue University (Neb.) later in the afternoon. Heidi Walberg threw a 1-hit shutout to lead the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory. Walberg also went 2 for 3 at the place. Cornerstone scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lauren Pasciak led off with a triple to left field and scored on two out error to win the game 1-0. Jenna Weightman and Haley Castillo also had hits for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone improves to 1-1 on the season.
Cornerstone will return to action on Monday, March 3rd when they take on Concordia (N.Y.) and Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.)
The Golden Eagles flew south to play their first competitions of 2014 at the Dot Richardson Spring Games at the National Training Center in Cleremont, Fla. Cornerstone will face Saint Thomas (Fla.) and Bellevue (Neb.) today and will have a couple of days off before returning to play on Monday when they face Concordia (N.Y.) and Hannibal LaGrange (Mo.).
