09/27/2014 - Men's Tennis

The Cornerstone men's tennis team took to the court today for a matchup with the Trojans of Taylor University.  For the fifth time in their first six matches, Cornerstone raced out to a match clinching 5-0 lead.  They didn't let the intensity drop even after the clinch, finishing the match 9-0.

09/27/2014 - Women's Tennis

The Cornerstone women's tennis team took to the courts Friday in its first Night of Nets match to fight malaria.  The biggest crowd Cornerstone tennis has ever seen turned out to help raise money and support the team.  Through the generaous donations of the crowd, enough money was raised to provide over 100 mosquito nets to those most in need.  This represents 100 lives that may be saved, and possibibly an entire community that could be transformed.

In the weekend of matches, Cornerstone first fell to Bethel in a tightly contested 6-3 match.  Winning for CU was Ashley Greene & Allison Rusticus in singles, as well as the doubles team of Ashley Greene & Heidi Boesl.  Allison had to fight back from a first set loss to win her match in a third set tie-breaker.

On Saturday, the women took on the Taylor Trojans, and fell 9-0 in a match that was much closer than the score would suggest.  Ashley Greene fought back from a first set loss to force a third set breaker, but came up just short.  In the match of the day, Janie Silvers lost a first set tie-breaker, won a second set tie-breaker, but then lost the third set tie-breaker for a 7-6, 6-7, (10-6) final score in what was a wonderfully played match by both players.

This concludes the women's tennis fall season.  Up next is Albion College in February.

09/27/2014 - Women's Soccer

(Lima, Ohio)  The Golden Eagles opened up WHAC play today at the University of Northwestern Ohio.  Cornerstone entered the game with a 5-0-2 record while UNOH entered the game with a 6-0-1 record.  The Golden Eagles played a tough first half keeping the Racers off the scoreboard.  The Racers dominated possession in the first half of play but the Golden Eagles kept them from getting quality chances and Allison Snowden made a nice save late in the half to keep a clean sheet.  The Racers did break the ice early in the second half scoring in the first minute of play to put Northwestern Ohio up 1-0.  The Golden Eagles responded with some good play after that doing a much better job of keeping the ball and creating more in the attack.  Cornerstone battled to the end but couldn't find the back of the net and ended with a 1-0 loss.  Cornerstone will returns to action on Wednesday night when they play Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m.

09/27/2014 - Volleyball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Head coach Ryan Campbell and his Golden Eagles finished the week with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Lourdes University as CU won going away 25-20, 25-23, 25-15. The victory lifts Cornerstone to 14-5 on the year and 5-3 in league action as they will host Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

After picking up a 3-0 win over Indiana Tech on Friday night, the volleyball team carried the momentum into Saturday to post a sweep of Lourdes. It was the first meeting against the Gray Wolves since they upset CU in the WHAC tourney a year ago.Cornerstone controlled the play on offense and defense as they limited the visitors to a dismal -.043 hitting percentage highlighted by 11 team blocks by the Golden Eagles.

CU was paced on offense by 11 kills from Megan Newhouse while Heather Green and Cailie Schultz each finished with four. Chelsea Lake (11) and Hope Leppink (8) combined for 19 assists while Amber Carmean had nine digs.

CU will stay at home on Wednesday and host Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m.

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) - The men's soccer team opened up their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate today with a 0-0 draw against rival Aquinas College. The fifth overtime match for the team this season ended in a draw for the first time as they are now 2-5-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in league play. CU will return home Wednesday to face Siena Heights at 7 p.m.

Aquinas came into the match as one of the top scoring teams in the country led by Aldony Mendez who ranks second individually with 13 goals but it was the CU defense that stepped up.

Nick Hopkins led the Golden Eagles with 6 saves (2 of which came in the 2nd OT) in between the posts.

The Golden Eagles did finish the day with 6 shots (3 from Gareth Flynn) while Aquinas had 6 total shots on goal.

Cornerstone will look for their first conference win when they host Siena Heights on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  That will be "Night of Nets" for the men's soccer team.  A suggested donation of $6 will purchase one bed net to send to Africa.  Click here to see more information.
