The Cornerstone University baseball team fell to Embry-Riddle University by a score of 3-2 tonight in Daytona Beach, Fla. Embry-Riddle began the season ranked third in the country in the NAIA poll and is coming off of a 50 win season.
Kyle Marburger started on the mound for Cornerstone and pitched valiantly in spite of the loss. He went six innings and gave up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Luke Heller pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit and no runs.
The loss moves the Cornerstone baseball team to 7-5 on the year. They will wrap up their Spring Break trip with two games tomorrow against Purdue North Central beginning at 10:00 AM.
(Clermont, Fla.) The Golden Eagles faced Grace College (Ind.) in their first game today. The two teams held each other scoreless through the first four innings but the Lancers broke the tie in bottom of the fourth inning scoring three runs to go up 3-0. The Golden Eagles responded with three of their own in the top of the 6th inning to tie the game at 3-3. Whitney Heasley got the Lancers out in order in the bottom half of the inning to keep the score tied. Jenna Weightman hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh to give Cornerstone a 4-3 lead and Heasley shut out the Lancers in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Heasley picked up her first win as a Golden Eagle and Cornerstone improved to 5-2.
Point Park picked up a run in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0 against Cornerstone in Game 2. The Golden Eagles responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Megan Oberst and Heidi Walburg were both hit by pitches and Emily Bode knocked them in with a double to put Cornerstone on top 2-1. Neither team scored again until the 6th inning when Heidi Walburg hit a 3-run shot and the Golden Eagles went on to score four runs to take a 6-1 lead and that would be how the game ended. Walburg picked up her 4th win of the year and Cornerstone improved to 6-2 on the year.
Cornerstone will return to action Thursday, March 6th when they take on Hannibal LaGrange and University of St. Francis (IL).
The Cornerstone University baseball team defeated Ashland University, an NCAA Division II opponent, in Auburndale, Fla. today by a score of 6-3.
Cornerstone starting pitcher Justin Geerts moved to 2-0 on the season with seven strong innings of work. He scattered nine hits and gave up two runs while striking out six. Jon Knapp finished the game for his first save of the year. The Golden Eagle defense was terrific turning two double plays and playing nine innings of error free baseball.
The Cornerstone offense took a commanding lead by plating five runs in the first three innings against Ashland. The offense was led by Travis Gordon, Davis Martin, and Austin Brunk who each had two hits on the day. Joel Boersen hit a double and scored two runs while Brunk drove in two runs.
Today's win puts Cornerstone at 7-4 on the season. They will head to Daytona tomorrow to take on nationally ranked Embry-Riddle in a 6:00 game.
Cornerstone found out that they are ranked #4 in the last NAIA poll and then they found out that the would face Northwest Christian University (Ore.) who was the Cascade Collegiate Conference runner-up to College of Idaho. Northwest Christian finished the regular season with an 18-13 record and finished 5th in their regular season with a 10-8 record but made it to the conference championship to play the regular season champion College of Idaho so they grabbed the conference 2nd automatic berth to the tournament. College of Idaho received the other automatic berth and Concordia (Ore.) picked up an At-Large berth from their conference. Click here to see the full bracket.
The Golden Eagles remained the 24th ranked team in the NAIA and they will play the 11th ranked Mayville State Comets from North Dakota on Thursday, March 13th at 11:15 am EST. The Comets are the North Star Athletic Conference Champion. They defeated #3 Jamestown (82-73) to win their tournament. They split with Jamestown during the season. Click here for the full bracket.
