04/24/2014 - Golden Eagles

The Cornerstone University Athletics Department celebrated another successful year of academics and athletics with Tuesday's announcement of Wes Hudson and Heidi Walburg as the 2013-14 Cornerstone University Men's and Women's Senior Athlete of the Year.  The annual award takes into account outstanding athletic achievement, academic performance, strong leadership and character.

Wes Hudson is a four-year member of the men's basketball program.  During his career as a Golden Eagle, Hudson received numerous conference and national accolades.  The Wayland native was named to the All-WHAC 1st team three years while being named WHAC Player of the Year his senior year.  He was honored three times as an NAIA All-American highlighted by his first-team honor this past year.   Hudson holds a handful of Cornerstone men's basketball records including fifth all-time career scorer with 2,036 points.  The three-year captain ranks second at CU in career free throw percentage (.887) and fifth in career three-pointers made (236) and career assists (412) during his 136 games played.  Coach Kim Elders and Hudson's teammates have honored him as the team MVP three years and the best defender two years.

"Wes is a once in a lifetime player and we are grateful and blessed to have him in our program for four years," Elders said.   "He's one of the hardest workers I've ever coached at CU.  He's also one of the best leaders we've ever had in our program.  Everyone on our team, the campus and throughout the WHAC respect Wes immensely.  As far as Wes as a person, they don't come any better.  He's left a mark on our program like few players have ever done.  We won't be able to replace him.  We will miss him on the court as a terrific player but even more as an outstanding young man."

For the softball program, Heidi Walburg is a career .407 hitter.  She has played in 147 games, has 180 career hits including 30 doubles and 39 home runs.  She has also driven in 150 runs.  Defensively, she is also a tremendous player whether she is pitching, playing shortstop or third base.  As a pitcher, she has 59 wins to her credit.  She has struck out over 430 hitters, while posting a career era of 2.56.  Her best season as a pitcher was her junior season, when she went 20-3 with an era of 1.24.  She held opposition hitters to a .199 batting avg in last year's campaign.

Heidi has been recognized for her great play on the field with many awards, including three offensive player of the year awards, 3 WHAC All-Conference team selections, an honorable mention spot on the NAIA All American team her freshman season, and a First Team All American Selection last season.  She has also been named to numerous NFCA all-Region and All-American teams.  In the classroom she has excelled as well, being named twice to the WHAC All-Academic team.

"Heidi had a tremendous impact for the positive in our softball program," said coach Jim Farrell.  "She has been one of the most feared hitters in the conference all four years she played.  While her skills and abilities were top notch, she continued to be humble and saw herself as just a part of the team.  Her presence on and off the field will be greatly missed in years to come."

Hudson and Walburg will be officially honored during a segment of next week's graduation events at Cornerstone University.

04/22/2014 - Men's Basketball

Former Zeeland East standout Josh Groenhof recently signed his Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles in 2014.  The 6-6 center/forward was recruited by Cornerstone a year ago but decided not to play basketball this past season.

Groenhof led his team to a couple of OK Conference titles during his junior and senior seasons at Zeeland East.  During his junior campaign, Groenhof averaged 12 PPG and 7 RPG while guiding the Chix to a 20-2 record.  The following year he led his team to an 18-4 mark.  Groenhof recorded a double-double that season averaging 16 PPG and 10 RPG.

Groenhof was named to the OK Conference 1st Team after both his junior and senior campaigns.  He was also named Defensive MVP for his team for his efforts during the 2011-12 season.  His post-season accolades increased the following year when he earned Associated Press 1st Team All-State honors.  He was also named The Holland Sentinel Player of the Year as a senior and was a member of the BCAM All-State 1st Team. Groenhof was also selected as Offensive MVP for the Chix during the 2012-13 season.

A four-year varsity starter, Groenhof scored 906 career points while pulling down 628 career rebounds. He had a career-high of 33 points vs. Muskegon High School on January 25, 2013.  Groenhof grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds on three different occasions during his senior season.

Coach Elders on Josh: "Josh is a talented player who has the ability to score in the low post and also knock shots from the perimeter. He is very good at passing out of the low post to open shooters on the perimeter. Josh  has a very good basketball IQ.  He is also a very rebounder and post defender.  We're excited to have him in our program."

Josh on why he chose Cornerstone:  "I chose Cornerstone because of the Christian atmosphere, how welcoming the team was, and the reputation of the coaches and basketball program Cornerstone has".

Groenhof is the son of Tom and Ruth Groenhof.
