04/17/2014 - Men's Golf

The Golden Eagles men's golf team participated in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship yesterday afternoon and after two rounds currently sit tied in fourth place with Northwestern Ohio.  Cornerstone ended the day with a team score of 629 placing them 21 strokes behind the leader.  Madonna is the current leader shooting a combined team score of 608 after 36 holes. 

Leading the Way

Cornerstone finished three players in the top 20 scores after day one.  Zach Mick led all Cornerstone golfers shooting 73 and 82 respectively for a total of 155, thirteen over par and tied for the ninth highest score after the day.  Tyler Coyne tied for 13th with Brandon Henry (Lourdes) and Parker Ross (Siena Heights) after 36 holes with a final 156 score.  Sam Vos also finished in the top 20 players, tied for 17th, after shooting a combined 158 score.    The Leader of the WHAC Championship is Joe Forest from Siena Heights who shot a 144 to conclude day one. 

Other Golden Eagles, Casey Vandenberg helped out shooting 176 while Chris Wisen added 160 to the final day one score. 

Looking Ahead

The final day of the WHAC men's golf championship will take place today, April 17, at Stonewater Country Club in Caledonia.  The winner of the tournament will receive a berth to the NAIA National Tournament.

 
04/16/2014 - Baseball

The Cornerstone University baseball team was swept today in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader at Davenport University by scores of 12-1 and 5-0. The Golden Eagles were outhit 23-6 on the day.

Cornerstone starting pitcher Jon Knapp was roughed up in game one and took the loss after allowing eight earned runs in 4.1 innings on 11 hits. Justin Geerts allowed three earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

Travis Gordon led the offense in game one with a double and a sacrifice fly for the lone RBI. Johnny Abbadusky and Dillon Reust each added a hit as well.

Taylor Cooper, the starter in game two for Cornerstone, allowed three earned runs on eight hits in five innings and was credited with the loss

Zach Bohl was on base twice in game two with a walk and a base hit. Nick Covello and Sonny Mastromatteo each had a hit in the loss.

The two losses move Cornerstone to 14-18 overall and 3-12 in the WHAC. The Golden Eagles will host Lourdes on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00.

 
04/16/2014 - Softball
 

(Grand Rapids, Mich.)  The Golden Eagles had to switch their home game to Davenport to play Davenport because the field was too wet from the last couple days of wet and cold.  The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game one.  Lauren Pasciak and Megan Oberst both drew walks to put runners on first and second base.  Ashley Niedermayer hit a line shot over the left fielder's head to knock both runners in to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead.   The game remained 2-0 through the fourth inning.  Davenport got one back in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a couple of errors and a wild pitch to make it 2-1.  Megan Oberst gave Cornerstone a little breathing room in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the center field fence.   The Panthers would get their first runner on base on an error but Walburg got the next batter to ground out and the next two to pop out to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.  Cornerstone improved to 15-10 overall and 7-4 in the WHAC Walburg improved to 9-4 from the circle. 

Cornerstone didn't fare as well in game two.  The Panthers scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead.  The Golden Eagles got one back in the bottom of the first.  Lauren Pasciak and Heidi Walburg both hit singles and Megan Oberst walked to load the bases.  Ashley Niedermayer hit a SAC Fly to the right fielder to bring Pasciak across the plate to make it 5-1.  The Panthers got another in the top of the fourth inning and then they exploded for 7 runs in the top of the sixth.  Cornerstone did not score in the bottom half of the game and the game was ended after six innings with a 13-1 lost for the Golden Eagles.   Rachel Nelson dropped to 5-6 with the loss and Cornerstone dropped to 15-11 overall and 7-5 in WHAC play.

Cornerstone will hit the road to play Indiana Tech on Saturday for a 1:00 start.

 
04/14/2014 - Men's Golf

The Cornerstone University Men's Golf team was set to participate in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship today and tomorrow but because of severe weather forecasted for the Kentwood area the championship has been moved to April 16 & 17.

Davenport University will host the event at Stonewater Country Club.  Tee times are set for a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start as players will play 36 holes on Wednesday and 18 on Thursday.  The Golden Eagles will enter the event placed fourth after finishing the fall season with a 1539 team stroke total.  

 
04/12/2014 - Softball

(Grand Rapids, Mich.)  The Golden Eagles hosted Siena Heights today and they got started early.   Jenna Weightman led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a Lauren Pasciak ground out.  Heidi Walburg the hit a two run shot off of the top of the left field fence to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead.  The Saints cut the lead in half with a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning to make it 2-1.  Neither team would score over the last three innings of the game.  Cornerstone would go on to win 2-1 just before the rain hit.  Heidi Walburg improved to 8-4 on the season.

Cornerstone would get it going early again in game two.  Jenna Weightman led off with another single in game 2 and then stole second and third base.  Megan Oberst drew a walk and Ashley Niedermayer drove in both runners with a triple to right field.  The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with singles by Rachel Bode, Alyssa Ambu, and Hailey Castillo to start the second inning.  Bode and Ambu both scored on an error by the shortstop to give Cornerstone a 4-0 lead.  Megan Oberst brought Weightman home with a single to center field and Pasciak scored on a wild pitch to give Cornerstone a 6-0 lead after two innings.  The Golden Eagles scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on consecutive doubles by Jenna Weightman and Lauren Paskiak to give Cornerstone and 8-0 lead after three innings.  Rachel Nelson would blank the Saints for the last two innings to preserve the shutout for the Golden Eagles to improve to 4-5 on the year.  Cornerstone improves to 14-10 on the season and Coach Jim Farrell wins his 300th game as the head coach of the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host league leader (9-1) Davenport at 3:30 p.m.
