Paul Koutz enters the 2012-2013 season in his twelfth year as assistant coach for sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-events and seventh year as recruiting coordinator for cross country/track and field.
Since becoming a full time coach in 2005, Koutz has guided his even groups to 45 All-American honors, five national runners-up, and one National Champion.  Amongst his even groups, Koutz has qualified eleven different high jumpers to the NAIA National Championships and has returned with nine All-American honrs including two National runners-up.  In 2011, four of his hurdlers posted NAIA qualifying marks indoors and outdoors as well as breaking two school records over teh barriers.  Cornerstone hurdlers have been represented at each Indoor and Outdoor NAIA National Championships since Koutz's arrival on staff in 2002.  The 2011 season also saw Koutz's first USATF Junior qualifier in the 400 hurdles.  The sprint crew has delivered much success under Koutz's tutelage as well, which has included national qualifying 4x100 and 4x400 teams on the women's side and three All-American squads over that span. On the men's sprint side, the 4x400 has been the school's most successful relay squad at the conference adn antional level.  At WHAC Championships, the 4x400 has won six titles in seven years, including the WHAC record outdoors and has been represented at Indoor Nationals each year since Koutz's arrival and outdoors nine of ten years including a pair of All-American relay teams.  As a multi-event coach, he has had five different National Qualifiers which include All-American performances in both the pentathlon and heptathlon for women and decathlon for men.  The year 2010 marked the first year that Koutz had multiple All-Americans in the same multi-event as his women pentathletes finished third adn fifth place respectively at the Indoor National Championships.
At the conference level, his athletes have amassed 70 WHAC individual titles and 14 relay championships including 20 WHAC meet records over a seven year/fourteen meet span.  He has also coached eleven WHAC Most Valuable Athletes over that same time frame.  At the 2011 Indoor and Outdoor WHAC meets, Koutz guided athltes to five individual WHAC titles, and one relay title as well as the Women's Indoor and Outdoor Athletes of the Meet awards.
During his collegiate Track & Field career at Cornerstone (1999-2001), Koutz compiled one of the most impressive resumes in school history.  Upon graduation, Koutz held 15 school and conference records in the hurdles, jumps, and relays.  He was honored in 2001 by being named the WHAC Outdoor Male Athleteof the year, as well as taking 8th place in the 400m hurdles at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships.  Koutz was also selected as the team MVP on two occastions and his senior year was given the school's highest honor winning the golden Eagle Award. 
Koutz graduated from Cornerstone University in 2001 with a B.A. in Youth Education.  He also currently holds two USA Track & Field level II coaching certifications.  He and his wife Jody currently live in the Grand Rapids area and have a daughter.  
 
Kevin Patterson
Assistant Coach - 14th Season

Kevin Patterson launches into his thirteenth season as assistant coach for pole vault. Twelve of those years, at least one of his vaulters has qualified for the NAIA National Championships. Since 2001 Cornerstone vaulters have won eight conference titles

Patterson has also coached many state champion vaulters at Rockford High School and held numerous vaulting clinics, including the nationally attended Grand Haven Beach Vault. "I enjoy my family, and any sports, but mainly coaching kids," Patterson said.

A 1985 graduate of Central Michigan University with a B.S. in business administration, Patterson competed for three years as a pole vault specialist at CMU. He lives in Rockford, Mich. with his wife, Patti, and their two children.

Nate Van Holten begins his first year as the Cornerstone University's Men's Head Cross Country Coach after eleven years as an assistant coach for men's middle distance, distance and race walk events. In that time his athletes have broken every school record in cross country and distance events in track and set three conference records.

Since 2006, he has guided the men's cross country team to four NAIA National Championship appearances and the 2009 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title.

In 2012, Zach Ripley, the 2010 NAIA National Champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, bettered the qualifying standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials in that event. Van Holten's men have owned the steeplechase in the WHAC, winning every year since 2004.

Van Holten also coached 2012 Olympic Trials Steeplechase, Derek Scott to nine All-America honors, and the 2007 NAIA National Championship in the 1500 meters as well a spot on the 2004 United States Jr. National team while at CU. He has also had five of his athletes qualify and compete at the USATF Jr. National Championships. Altogether, Van Holten has coached 14 athletes to 32 All-American honors, two National titles, and six National Runner-up finishes.

During his collegiate career, Van Holten was an NAIA All-American 4x400 meter runner, competing in four national championship events and earning three WHAC titles in relay events. Van Holten received a master's degree in social work from Grand Valley State University in 2004 and completed his B.S. in youth psychology from Cornerstone in 2002. He also holds three USATF Level II coaching certifications as well as instructor training certification. Nate, his wife, Jane, and their two children live in Grand Rapids.

After 15 seasons as the Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach, Wortley begins the 2012-2013 school year as the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. Since 1996 he has built a nationally recognized program producing the best runners jumpers and throwers in school history.

In 28 consecutive NAIA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships, 52 Golden Eagle athletes have earned All-American honors 106 times along with over 45 All-America Scholar Athlete awards. At the conference level, his athletes have won 154 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference event titles and six Team Championships.

Wortley was named NAIA Region VII and VIII Track & Field Coach of the Year for women in 2001, 2004 and 2005 and for men in 2003. He has also been selected as WHAC Coach of the Year seven times for Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. He is the current the President of NAIA Cross Country Coaches Association and has served as the Chair of the Outdoor Championships Games Committee and been Head Field Event Referee at four NAIA Championship Meets.

Wortley graduated from Cornerstone in 1988 with a B.A. in English literature. He completed his Master's Degree in English/professional writing at Western Michigan University in 1992. He also holds three U.S.A. Track & Field Level II coaching certifications. His wife, Anita, is also a Cornerstone alumna. They have two children.
