(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The perfect weather and course conditions for the 2011 NAIA Great Lakes Invitational looked less than ideal for the Cornerstone Women's Cross Country team. This season's top runner and conference leader, Jill Louisignau was unexpectedly ill during the night and not able to run.
"Giving up Jill's likely top fifteen finish meant a possible one hundred point swing in the team standings, which is tough to absorb," said coach Rod Wortley.
Freshman Julie Oosterhouse did her best to limit the damage, running a season best 18:43 to place 18th in the field of 337 women. Junior, Audry Yonge ran a personal best 19:15, taking 40th and freshman CallyAnne Wyma also ran a season best 19:36 to place 62nd. Julia Contreras and Mindy Lewis followed in 19:56 / 87th and 20:27 / 114th.
The Golden Eagles placed eleventh out of 33 teams. Azusa Pacific, the number one ranked team in the NAIA won with 59 points.
The women return to Riverside Park on November 5 for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship.
