MARION, IN (4/26) The opening day of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships proved to be a challenge as intermittent rain showers persisted for most of the morning and afternoon.
Zach Yeo was the first Golden Eagle to compete, taking fifth in his heat in the 400 meters with a time of 49.12. Next up, a trio of CU men raced the 400 hurdles. Adam Duerksen and Ryan Versen placed fourth and fifth in the first heat with Duerksen holding off Versen 54.79 to 54.95. In the second of four heats, John Klumpp advanced to Friday's semi-finals by taking fifth in 54.60.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Alex Green ran a smart, patient race. After sitting at the back of the pack in the early laps of the second heat, Green moved steadily through the field. With two laps to go he was well positioned in fifth and finished fourth in 9:24.08. The top five in each heat advanced to Saturday's final.
