Men's Golf - Sat, Apr. 30, 2011
(Canton, Mich.) The men's golf team defeated Davenport 3.5-2.5 in the match play championship round to win the WHAC championship and earn the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships.
Chet Vandenberg,
Ben Vanbiesbrouck and
Marcus Brussee won their round while
Alex Lanning tied to give CU 3.5 points to Davenport's 2.5. Head coach
Eric Campbell was named the WHAC Coach of the Year.
The Golden Eagles were seeded 4th heading into the WHAC tournament and defeated Seina Heights 4-2 in the first round of match play. The team proceeded to defeat #1 seed Madonna 3.5-2.5 to set up Saturday's championship match vs. #2 seed Davenport.
The #4
seeded Golden Eagles completed their run to the WHAC title by upsetting #2
Davenport 3 ½ to 2 ½ in the final match at Fellows Creek Golf Club. It was an exciting day for the Golden Eagles
and tension filled matches that ended with
Ben Vanbiesbrouck defeating the
Panthers Kevin Palmer on the last hole of the match to give Cornerstone the
victory. #3 Vanbiesbrouck was down 1
with 3 holes but won the next 2 holes to take a 1 shot advantage into the last
hole. He tied the last hole to win his
match. #1
Chet Vandenberg won his match
3 and 1 over Edwin Napieralski to pick up Cornerstone's first point of the
day. Vandenberg went 3-0 in the WHAC
tournament and shot a total of 7-under par during that time. #2
Josh Mick fell 5 and 4 to Kale Wasso. Mick finish with a 1-2 record with a big win
against Madonna. #4
Marcus Brussee was
up most of the day but Cam Thomas caught up late and they were even going into
the last hole. Thomas missed a 3-footer
and Brussee sank his 1 ½ footer to claim his match. Brussee finished 2-1 in the tournament. #5
Alex Lanning came from 2 down with 5 holes
to play to halve his match. That was a
huge half point for Cornerstone. Lanning
finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record.
#6 Freshman
Kevin Yee lost his match 2 and 1 to Jackson Davison. Yee finished with an 0-1-1 record.
Coach
Eric Campbell stated "the team had to come
from behind against both Madonna and Davenport but they persevered with a total
team effort. I am very proud of them."
This is the first time in Cornerstone golf history that any team or individual has qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. The National Tournament will take place at Deere Run, Quad Cities IL/IA May 24-27. For more information on the national tournament
