Game 1 - Cornerstone University (4) @
UM-Dearborn (0)
Cornerstone took game 1 of an afternoon double-header today at UM-Dearborn
behind the strong pitching performance of freshman Heidi Warmelink and timely hitting from Lisa Peppel and Lauren Pasciak.Warmelink pitched a complete
game and scattered 7 hits through the 7 innings.Warmelink and
Dearborn pitcher Jennifer Elliot were engaged in a pitching duel until the 6th
inning when Cornerstone finally broke through with 4 runs.Melanie Creager led off the key inning with a
single, one of the three hits she had on the day, and advanced to second on a
passed ball by Dearborn catcher Chelsea Pomaville. After a strike out and
a pop out by Rachael and Dinah Gruppen, Lisa Peppel smacked a single and scored Creager
for the game's first run.Kathy DeYoung then walked and Lauren Pasciak took a pitch and sent it up the
gap for a double scoring both Peppel and DeYong and breaking the game wide
open.Dearborn threatened to answer in the bottom half of the sixth
getting consecutive singles, but Warmelink slammed the door getting pinch
hitter Veronica Niezgoda to fly harmlessly to center.Warmelink finished
the strong performance with a 1-2-3 seventh and notched her 8th win
against 6 losses.
The win improved the Golden Eagle's record to 14-11 and 5-6
in the WHAC, and set up a chance to sweep the road double-header.
Game 2 - Cornerstone University
(7) @
UM-Dearborn (3)
The night cap of the road double-header started a little
inauspicious after Cornerstone gave up two unearned runs in the
first. After two hits, two fielder's choice, and an error, Dearborn was
threatening to put up a big first inning; but freshman pitcher Heidi Warmelink bore down and struck the next two
Wolves out and escaped with only giving up two runs.Cornerstone responded
by posting 4 runs the next half inning and chased the starting pitcher Sheri
Koenig from the game. The big inning started with two errors, which
resulted in a run scored by Victoria Risenhoover, and continued until
lead-off hitter Jessica Kuhlman blasted a long three run home
run, scoring Kathy DeYoung and Lisa Peppel.Cornerstone took a 4-2 lead and
they never looked back.Jessica Kuhlman had an all around super game
going 3 for 4, scoring 2 runs, and knocking in 5 with a double, home run and a
stolen base.As in the first game, pitcher Heidi Warmelink pitched a complete game, giving
up 1 earned run and striking out 5 through the 7 innings. The win improved
her record to 9 and 6.
The sweep took the Golden Eagle's record to 15-11 and 6-6 in
the WHAC as they look forward to hosting a double-header tomorrow, April 16,
against conference foe Concordia University.
