(Grand Rapids, Mich.) Better than normal conditions resulted in some good early season performance at the annual Grand Rapids Open as five West Michigan schools along with Ferris State University competed at Housemen Field.
The top Cornerstone performance came from Isaac Cox who lowered the freshman record in the 800 meters by nearly one second. His time of 1:54.08 eclipsed Derek Scott's mark of 1:54.90 from 2004. Cox pulled clear of the field with 150 meters to go but was edged out at the finish line by Nick Thelen of Aquinas who won in 1:54.02.
Sophomore, Zach Yeo waged a homestretch battle with Davenport's Alex Blem. Yeo took second in 49.78 to Blehm's 49.54.
The Golden Eagles placed 2-4-5-7 in the 400 hurdles led by Adam Duerksen in 56.07 followed by John Klumpp (56.92), Ryan Versen (57.52) and Jim VanOss (58.51).
In the hammer throw, Bryant Langdon added 14 feet to his previous best taking fourth in 139' 7".
The 4 x 400 meter squad of Duerksen, Eric Schroeder, Klumpp and Yeo took second to Hope College in 3:24.23.
