Local standout Ty Mason from Comstock Park High School recently signed his Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cornerstone University in the fall of 2011. The Panther's two-time team MVP led his team to a 19-2 record and an OK Blue Conference title (11-0) this past season. The 6-2 guard led the Grand Rapids area in scoring this season averaging 23 PPG. He also averaged 6.8 RPG and 4 APG and was third in the area from the free throw line at 82%
Mason totaled 958 points during his three-year varsity career while leading his team to a 55-10 record during that time.
For his efforts, Mason was selected 1st Team All-Conference for the second consecutive year. He was also named Associated Press 1st Team All-State as well as being selected to the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team as a senior.
Mason has also been very successful in the classroom, maintaining a 3.4 GPA. He is planning on pursuing a degree in Sports Management at CU.
"We are thrilled to have Ty come to Cornerstone and be a part of our program. He was definitely one of the top two to three players in the area this year. Ty's a complete player and can score points in a lot of different ways. He's tough, physical and very strong and is a tremendous finisher around the basket. Ty can also rebound the ball well and is a very unselfish player. He will fit into our system very well at CU."
"I chose Cornerstone because it seems like the perfect fit for me. I like the campus feel like it's a great place to further my education. From a basketball standpoint, CU's style of play fits me well and puts me in a position where I can succeed. I feel like at Cornerstone I will be part of something special."
