"We entered our throwers and two guys in the steeplechase, but we really needed to get in the race walk since it's one of the few occasions we have to do it," said Coach Rod Wortley.

The temperature at the starting line was 22 degrees with a biting breeze blowing up down the homestretch. Kris Shear went immediately to the front and was never challenged by anything other than the conditions. His winning time of 22:06.64 took more than one minute off his school record of 23:16.44 set in 2010.
