The Golden Eagles won their second consecutive WHAC Tournament title at
home tonight as they defeated the Warriors of Indiana Tech 66-54. The first half featured 6 ties and 8 lead
changes as neither team got more than a 5 point advantage. A key moment in the game came with 3:17 on
the clock when Indiana Tech's Anthony Johnson was ejected from the game for a
flagrant foul. The Golden Eagles broke a
29-29 tie with a Ted Albert layup with :08 seconds left on the clock. The Warriors got off a shot from half-court
that hit the front of the rim and bounced out so the Golden Eagles went into
the locker room up 31-29. It would be a
lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Cornerstone made a 6-0 run to start the 2nd
half to go up 37-29. Ted Albert pushed
the lead to double digits (41-31) with 13:15 left in the game. The Warriors cut the lead to 6 (44-38) with
10:14 on the clock. The Golden Eagles
pushed the lead back to 10 (50-40) with 8:30 and they would keep a double digit
lead for the rest of the half.
Cornerstone's largest lead of the half (61-46) came with 3:01 left in
the game. Indiana Tech cut the lead down
to 10 (64-54) with 1:06 but the Golden Eagles would score one more basket to
win the game 66-54 and claim the 2011 WHAC Tournament title to go with their
regular season title.
The Golden Eagles will wait to find out what seed they will get
when the NAIA Brackets come out tomorrow.
