(Allendale, Mich.) On the eve of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, the Golden Eagles entered three events at the Grand Valley State University Indoor Tune Up meet.
After recovering from injury most of the indoor season, Cody Risch tested his fitness in the 5,000 meters. Competing unattached, Risch dropped twelve seconds off his personal best from last season finishing fourth in 15:43.42.
Transfer freshman, Isaac Cox also competed in his first meet of the indoor campaign, also running unattached in the 800 meters. After a slow first 400, Isaac broke the race open with a 27.5 over the next 200 meters building a sizable lead. Up the final homestretch he began to tie up as Austin Brown of GVSU reached his shoulder. The two battled all the way to the line with Cox refusing to yield earning the win in 1:55.64 to 1:55.80. The time took four seconds off the freshman record of 1:55.71 set by Jordan Harrison in 2003.
The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Spencer Perry, Adam Duerksen, Ryan Versen and Zach Yeo returned to the site of last week's near miss needing to improve their time from last week by .13 to hit the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. They came close again, running 3:20.61 to take third behind GVSU and Hillsdale.
