The Golden Eagles started the WHAC final much like they have started many games this season. Maile Carigon has scored in the first 10 minutes of a couple games and she did so again today. Carigon took a ball just outside the top of the box, touched it to her right and buried a shot in the left side of the goal in the 6th minute of play to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. Cornerstone played well and moved the ball pretty well in the half but didn't create many good chances after the goal. Siena Heights didn't create too many good chances either and both team ended the half with just 1 shot on goal.
The Saints came out in the 2nd half with more urgency and started creating some good chances about midway through the half and they finally got on the board on a header in the 73rd minute of play. Cornerstone had to weather the storm for about 10 minutes when Siena Heights was really pressing the action. The Golden Eagles did seem to settle down right towards the end of the half. Cornerstone made it in to OT and seemed to be able to possess the ball more in both OT creating more chances. The best chance of the OT period came when Amanda Dudiak won a ball in the middle of the field and played a ball to Jen Kuipers. Kuipers then found Paige Knott running down the middle of the field. Knott made a good first touch out in front of her and fired a hard shot from the top of the box but the ball went straight to the keeper. Cornerstone continued to battle throughout the OT's but couldn't find the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The game then went into a Penalty Kick Shootout. Cornerstone won the toss and went first. Ashleigh Lund stepped up and drove the ball hard and low under the GK to go up 1-0. Siena Heights first shot went over the crossbar to give CU a 1-0 lead. Jen Kuipers stepped up an calmly put the 2nd kick in to the left side of the goal. The Saints responded with a make off the left post. Maile Carigon took the 3rd shot and hit the underside of the crossbar and into the goal. Siena responded with another shot that het the right post and into the net. Riley Steen took the 4th kick and put the ball over the top. Siena Height responded with a make and tied the score at 3-3. Amanda Van Laar took the 5th kick and calmly placed it to the right of Siena's keeper to make it 5-4 with one kicker remaining. Siena sent the 5th kicker to the line and she put the ball over the goal to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 win in Penalty Kicks. Cornerstone wins the regular season and tournament for the first time in the history of the program and will advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the second time. The Golden Eagles will find out who they play and where they will play on Sunday night.
