ROCHESTER (10/8) On a warm breezy day, Grand Rapids Colleges swept the top three spots at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Oakland University. In 2007, the last time Cornerstone raced on Oakland's Katke Cousins golf course, the Golden Eagles put three in the top five and took second as a team.
Senior, Zach Ripley was fifth in 2007. This time he led wire to wire. After taking the leaders through the first mile in 4:45, Ripley opened up a 29 second gap by the time he finished the 8,000 meter course in 25:15. Alex Green was in the top ten early on and worked his way to fifth in 26:02.
Jared Courtright (27th 27:15), Cody Risch (45th 27:46) and Peter Kaijala 49th 27:52) raced well enough to secure the third place team finish behind Calvin and Aquinas.
The Knights took the win with 55 points followed by the Saints at 76, with the Golden Eagles totaling 100. "Times were not that fast today," said CU distance coach, Nate Van Holten, "but the guys did what we needed to. Our total team time was 29 seconds faster than Aquinas' which should get us some notice in the national rankings next week."
Cornerstone will face many of the better NAIA teams in the Midwest at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge held at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids on October 23.
