(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles improved to 5-4 after a 4-2 win over the visiting Foresters of Huntington University. Riley Steen scored the first goal of the game in the 6th minute. Ashleigh Lundand Anna Stegink assisted on the goal. CU took a 1-0 lead into half-time after 39 minutes of solid defense from both teams. Amanda VanLaar scored off a pass from Kelley Ritsema in the 51st minute to push the lead to 2-0 but the Foresters would not give up. Huntington's Sam Cubic scored three minutes later to cut the lead to 2-1. Paige Knott connected with Ashley Morrow in the 57th minute to give CU some breathing room and give CU the eventual game winner. Claire Creasy scored three minute later (59:44) for Huntington to once again pull within one goal 3-2. In the 79th minute Anna Stegink connected with Ashleigh Lund to give CU the 4-2 decision. Goalkeeper Alyssa Morrow played 81 minutes and recorded 7 saves and Sara Sowerwine finished the game playing 8:24 and getting 1 save. Both teams had similar stats as the Foresters finished with 10 shots on goal and CU ended with 8.
The soccer teams partnered with World Vision to raise money to purchase bed nets to send to Sub-Saharan Africa to help prevent the spread of malaria. All funds from the men's and women's games will purchase a bed net at the cost of $6 to help save lives.
Cornerstone will travel to Siena Heights for their first WHAC game of the season on Tuesday, September 28 at 4 p.m.
