The Cornerstone University men's soccer team officially concluded the 2009 season with their annual awards banquet and dinner. Over 100 team players, coaching staff, family members and friends gathered for the 2009 Men's Soccer Banquet on Feb 19thin the Gainey Center. Following dinner the team awards were handed out for the 2009 season.
Three awards were bestowed upon freshman defender Jordan Wilson (Mississauga/ON) as he received the Jeff Dresser Most Valuable Player award, the team's 2009 Defensive MVP award, and the 2009 Goal of the Year. As a first year player, Jordan was outstanding in his role as central defender. He started and played in 17 games. He scored 2 goals and had 2 assists for 6 points. Jordan was named to WHAC 1st Team All Conference team as well.
The 2009 Offensive MVP was awarded to junior midfielder Nic Tolsma (Ada, MI/Rockford HS). Nic led the team in points (12) with 5 goals and 2 assists. After sitting out the 2008 season, Nic's comeback was impressive and greatly appreciated by his Coaches and teammates. He was also honored with WHAC 3rd Team All Conference honors.
Our Most Improved Player of the Year went to freshman defender Trevor Hunt (Rockford, MI/Rockford HS). Trevor came in and played a key role in the back especially when senior defender Matt D'Agostino was injured and his services were called upon. Trevor was also named to the 2009 WHAC Champions of Character team.
The Golden Eagle Award was presented to senior midfielder Matt Kunnen (Comstock Park, MI/Calvin Christian HS). Matt had a career year as an outside midfielder/fwd with 4 goals and 3 assists (11 points). Matt served as a senior captain. "Matt is a great representation of the discipline and perseverance it takes to be successful both in the classroom and on the field." Matt was a two time Academic All American and when you watched him play you could not help but see his heart as he always left it all out on the field," noted Coach Bell.
Junior Ian Grotenhuis (Hilo, HI/Christian Liberty Academy) was awarded the GumiAward . The "Gumi" is given annually to the player who can "best be characterized by his boundless enthusiasm, determination, drive, courage and refusal to quit." The award is named for Megumu Masuda who played for Cornerstone from 99-01. As a reserve midfielder, Ian was determined to make his teammates better in every situation regardless of his own circumstances. Ian scored two outstanding goals vs. Mary Grove.
2009 was the first year that the Scott Underwood Memorial Scholarship was awarded to a Cornerstone University Soccer player in honor of Scott Underwood who was tragically killed in an automobile accident last year. Scott played from 84-87 and was a 1986 NCCAA All American. Assistant Coach Brett Lile, who was one of Scott's close friends as well as teammate, presented the scholarship award to senior captain Dave DeBoer. Dave has had an outstanding career as a central defender and had a major impact on the lives of teammates, coaching staff and fellow students that he invested in for the past 2 years.
2009 was also the first year a Soccer Alumnus of the Year was named. This award was presented to an Alumnus who has shown dedication, passion and leadership in support of Cornerstone University men's soccer. Brett Lile '86 was named as the 2009 Alumnus of the Year. Brett has been a constant positive presence in our program for the last 23 years.
Of special note, 5 players were named to both the WHAC All Academic and Academic All American teams. Seniors Dave DeBoer(Grand Rapids, MI), Ben Hanson (Lowell, MI/Lowell HS), Matt Kunnen (Comstock Park, MI), Aaron Musser (Madrid, Spain) and junior Jim Hughes received the honors.
