(Sylvannia, Ohio) The Golden Eagles concluded regular season play today at Lourdes University and they came away with a 6-2 and 5-3 sweep of the Gray Wolves. Cornerstone jumped out to a quick lead in game 1 scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Jenna Weightman led off the game with a double to left field. Heidi Walburg drew a walk to put runners on first and second base. Megan Oberst followed with a double to bring home Weightman and Walburg scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0. Alexsandra Szajna then drove in Oberst with a double to make it 3-0. The Gray Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the inning on a lead off solo homer to make it 3-1. Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings. Cornerstone got another in the top of the fifth. Heidi Walburg and Megan Oberst drew two out walks and Ashley Niedermayer singled to bring Walburg in to put the Golden Eagles up 4-1. The Gray Wolves got one back in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within two runs (4-2). Cornerstone got a little insurance in the top of the seventh scoring two more runs. Lauren Pasciak led off with a double. Heidi Walburg singled to bring Pasciak home. Ashley Niedermayer hit a double to score Walburg to give Cornerstone a 6-2 cushion going into the bottom of the seventh. Heidi Walburg retired the side in the seventh to secure the 6-2 win for the Golden Eagles.
Jenna Weightman led off game two much the same as game one with a double. She advanced to third on a Lauren Pasciak ground out and scored on a Heidi Walburg ground out to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. The Gray Wolves tied the game at 1-1 with a hit and Cornerstone error in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Niedermayer led off the second inning with a single to left field. Alexsandra Szajna advanced Niedermayer to second with a SAC bunt. Emily Bode pushed her to third with a single and she scored on a Rachel Nelson Sacrifice Fly to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1. Jenna Weightman made it 3-1 with a solo homer to lead off the third inning. Rachel Nelson gave up just two singles from the third to the sixth innings to keep the Gray Wolves off the board as Cornerstone took a 3-1 lead into the last inning. Cornerstone added a couple more in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run double by Heidi Walburg to put the Golden Eagles up 5-1 but the Gray Wolves fought back in the bottom of the inning with two runs but came up a couple short in the 5-3 loss to the Golden Eagles. Rachel Nelson improved to 8-6 on the season. Cornerstone completes the regular season with a 22-14 overall record and a WHAC record of 12-6 (3rd Place).
