The Cornerstone University men's soccer team held it's annual soccer banquet on Feb 19th in the Gainey Center. The team gave out its awards and honored both team and individual successes throughout the season. The Golden Eagles posted a 9-7-1 record and finished 5th in the WHAC with a 5-4-1 record.

Academically, this year's team had 4 Academic All Conference players and 3 Academic All Americans-Mark Kunnen (Comstock Park, MI/Calvin Christian HS), Brendan Powers (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville HS), and Marcel Santana (Santiago, DR/Colegio DelaSalle)

A number of awards were handed out that the team voted for and they are as follows:

The Jeff Dresser MVP Award went to senior Jordan Wilson (Mississauga, ON/Our Lady of Mount Carmel HS). The senior has had an outstanding career for the Golden Eagles. He was a 4-time WHAC 1st Team All Conference player and capped his career by being named the 2013 WHAC Defensive Player of the Year. Jordan had 2 goals and 3 assists in 2013.

The team's Most Valuable Defensive Award went to sophomore Mark Rougas (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Academy). Rougas started and played in all 17 games this season. Rougas scored his 1st career goal vs. Spring Arbor in a 2-0 win. Once again Rougas was key part of a stingy defense that only allowed 17 goals on the season. Last year Rougas was voted Rookie of the Year by his teammates.

The team's Most Valuable Offensive honors went sophomore Mario Williams (Toronto, ON/Hilbert College). Mario was team leader in goals (6 goals) and had 3 game winners. Mario was also named to the WHAC All Conference Honorable Mention team.

The Most Improved Award went to junior Nick Manzer (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey HS). Manzer appeared in 9 games with 6 starts as a defender.  Nick scored his first career goal in a 3-0 win vs. Indiana Tech.

The Megumu Masuda Award, given to the Cornerstone University soccer player who best exemplifies the dedication, enthusiasm, determination and overall inspiration that was displayed by Megumu Masuda during his time on the Men's team was presented to junior Jeremy Grotenhuis (Hilo, HI/Christian Liberty Academy).

The Scott Underwood Award was awarded to freshman Garrett Nimmo (Livonia/Southfield Christian). Scott Underwood was an All-American soccer player here at GRBC from 1984-1987. Scott was tragically killed in a car accident in 2008. Scott's family has set up a scholarship in his honor.

Our Rookie of the Year Award was presented to freshman Eric Hamilton (Lathrup Village, MI/Southfield Christian). Eric started and played in 16 games this year. Eric had 1 goal and 1 assist this year as a defender.

Golden Eagle Award was given to senior Mark Kunnen (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) Mark was also named to 2013 WHAC Champions of Character Team.

Each year, the program honors an Alumnus of the Year. The 2013 recipient of our Alumnus of the Year went to Brian Dahnke. Brian played for the Comets from 1988-1991 and went on to serve as an Assistant Coach for 4 more years. This award recognizes the achievements of an outstanding alumnus whose personal life, professional accomplishments and community service best exemplifies the mission of Cornerstone University.

In closing, the seniors were honored by their teammates. Shell Enns, Mark Kunnen, Richard Moylan, Justin Schoepke, Sam Stearns, Jordan Wilson
