The Cornerstone University baseball team split a home, conference double header today with Siena Heights. The split moves the Cornerstone record to 12-8 overall and 2-2 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC).
Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in game one into the 5th inning before Sienna Heights jumped on top 2-1. Siena Heights tacked on four more in the 6th to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The game ended as a 7-3 win for Siena Heights.
Kyle Marburger started on the mound for Cornerstone and suffered the loss. He pitched 5.1 innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Taylor Cooper pitched 3.2 strong innings in relief in which he gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
The Cornerstone offense had 11 hits in game one but couldn't seem to come up with the big hit with runners in scoring position. Zach Harbison had three hits and Zach Bohl added two more. Both Joel Boersen and Jordan McCartney added a hit in pinch hitting appearances.
Game two was decided in the last inning on a walk-off RBI single by Nick Covello to give Cornerstone a 5-4 win. Covello went 3-4 with two triples, two RBI and one run scored. Leadoff man Dillon Reust scored two runs and Zach Harbison reached twice and scored once. Harbison was also great behind the plate as he caught both ends games in the twin bill.
Luke Heller pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Golden Eagles. In seven strong innings Heller gave up one earned run on five hits and three walks to go along with four strikeouts. The win moves him to 3-1 on the year.
Cornerstone is scheduled to play another home double header tomorrow against Siena Heights beginning at 1:00 PM.
