The Cornerstone University baseball team split a doubleheader today against Benedictine University at Springfield in Auburndale, Fla. The Golden Eagles were led by two outstanding pitching performances by the starters, Luke Heller and Jon Knapp.
In game one, Luke Heller was saddled with a tough loss in a 3-0 game giving up just two hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. The loss puts him at 1-1 on the season. Justin Geerts went 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball in relief.
Benedictine benefited from four Cornerstone errors in their first win of the season. Zach Bohl led the Golden Eagle hitters with two hits. Travis Gordon went 1-2 continuing his fantastic start to the season.
Game two resulted in a 2-1 victory for Cornerstone after Jon Knapp delivered a dominant performance. Knapp earned the win in his first decision of the season by pitching into the seventh inning while giving up one run on four hits and striking out nine.
The Golden Eagle offense pushed two runs across in the third inning with the aid of two Benedictine errors and RBIs from Dillon Reust and Travis Gordon. Johnny Abbadusky and Joel Boersen scored runs in the win.
Ryan Harris came on in relief of Knapp in the seventh and earned his first save. The split puts Cornerstone at 5-3 this year and sets Benedictine up at 1-1. After a day off tomorrow, Cornerstone will play Monday against Point Park and Evangel in Auburndale.
