The Golden Eagles started out a little slow today in their game against Siena Heights. The Saints got out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Cornerstone would not score their 6th point until mid-way through the first half. Katelyn Cousins scored 4 of the first 6 points for Cornerstone. The Saints had a 14-6 lead with 10:12 left in the half and then they hit a dry spell over the next four minutes and Cornerstone pulled to within 4 points (14-10) with 7:25 on the clock. The Saints made a 9-2 run over the next three and a half minutes to take their largest lead (23-12) of the half with 3:53 remaining. Cornerstone cut the lead to 6 points on a Janae Trombley basket with 1:08 on the clock and had another chance to cut it to 4 but missed their shot and Siena Heights scored at the clock wound down to take a 28-20 lead into the lockeroom at the half. Katelyn Cousins scored 12 points to lead all scorers at the half. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc in the first half. Cornerstone made 1 of 10 and Siena Heights went 0 for 5 from that distance. Cornerstone made the first basket of the second half and cut the lead to 6 but the Saints made a 15-8 run over the next five and a half minutes to go up 43-30 with 12:53 left in the half. The Golden Eagles battled back with an 11-2 run to get themselves back into the game at 45-41. They had a couple of opportunities to get it to 2 points but couldn't convert until 7:08 on the clock. Ashley Niedermayer made a basket to cut the lead to 48-47 and got fouled but missed the foul shot. Siena Heights pushed the lead back to 4 (53-49) with 4:48 on the clock. Katelyn Cousins cut it to 53-51 at 4:07 and then tied the game at 53-53 with two foul shots at 2:23 but the Golden Eagles couldn't quite get over the hump and Siena Heights was a perfect 12 for 12 down the stretch as they held off the Golden Eagles for a 67-58 win. Katelyn Cousins led the Golden Eagles with 23 points. That puts her over the 1000 point mark in her career which includes her first year that she played at Davenport. Siena Heights advances to the WHAC final and gain 1 of 2 automatic berths for the WHAC because they will face Davenport in the final so both teams will gain automatics. Cornerstone is now 22-9 overall and they will have to wait to see if they earn an at-large berth to the NAIA Tournament in Sioux City, Ia.
KEY TEAM STATS
Cornerstone shot only 21.2% in the first half compared to Siena Height's 44%. Cornerstone shot much better (43.3%) in the second half but Siena Heights made (50%) of their shots but a key for them was that they drained 16 of 17 from the foul line and 12 of 12 when Cornerstone was fouling and trying to get back in the game.
The Golden Eagles will have to sit and wait to see if they get one of the at-large berths to the NAIA Tournament.
