The announcement was made earlier this afternoon for the 2013-14 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Awards. The Golden Eagles took three of the top four individual WHAC awards including Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors along with winning the regular season title.
Kim Elders has notched his sixth coaching honor during his career at Cornerstone University. In 21 seasons under Elders, the Golden Eagles are 525-206 overall. Since taking over the program in 1993, Elders' teams have averaged 25 victories per season. Kim Elders has guided his teams to three Final 4's, three Elite 8's and two National Championship Titles.
Wes Hudson was honored as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year averaging 19.4 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. The prestigious honor is the first for the senior co-captain. Hudson was also named to the WHAC First Team All-Conference which is his third time honored on the team. The senior was also named to the All-Defensive Team and the Champions of Character Team.
Grand Valley State transfer, Ben Lanning, was named the conference Newcomer of the Year. The Grandville native averaged 14.5 points per game and grabbed an average of 6.1 rebounds per game. Lanning ranks number five in DII in total blocks this season with 57 averaging 1.9 per game placing him on the WHAC All-Conference, All-Newcomer Team and All-Defensive team.
Several other Golden Eagles racked up awards in the WHAC today. Jake Plite was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention team while Nick Manzer and Justin Pepper were placed on the WHAC All-Academic Team
After finishing the WHAC regular season 20-2 and claiming the regular season title, the No. 5 Cornerstone University men's basketball team will enter the tournament tomorrow as the number one seed hosting Concordia University at Mol Arena. Tip off set for 7:30 p.m.
