After finishing 20-2 in conference play, the No. 3 Cornerstone men's basketball team wrapped up the 2013-14 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular seasoning claiming the top seed heading into the conference tournament and the conference's first automatic berth to this year's NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. The winner of the WHAC tournament receives the second birth. Should Cornerstone also win the tournament, the tournament runner-up receives an automatic bid.
The regular-season title is the seventh for the Golden Eagles and first since 2010-11 season, after going on to win the national championship. The WHAC tournament will begin this week with the first round on Wednesday, Feb. 26 with games played at the higher seed courts. The No. 9 Davenport Panthers (18-4) follow behind claiming second place while UNOH and Madonna grabbed the third and fourth place seeds and the honors of hosting the first round games.
Cornerstone will host number eight seed, Concordia University, for the first round game. The Golden Eagles will face the winner of Wednesday's Aquinas/Madonna contest on Saturday, March 1, for the semi-final game if they win on Wednesday night. The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship will take place on Monday, March 3.
During the conference tournament last year, the Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaking loss in double overtime during the WHAC semifinal game to Davenport University. Cornerstone did not receive and at-large bid to the National Tournament as the Golden Eagles concluded their season. The Golden Eagles are to claim another WHAC Conference Championship and hopefully a late run into the NAIA Tournament.
