CU Men's Tennis picked up their first win of the spring season with a 6-3 victory of Albion College. Cornerstone started out strong, breaking immediately on all 3 doubles courts and holding on to sweep the doubles early and take the 3-0 lead. Cornerstone was a little shakier in singles, splitting 3 of the 6 singles matches. Getting singles wins were Alex Tarnow, Austin Hunt, and picking up his first collegiate win was newcomer Santiago Mackrey.
The match of the day belonged to Austin Hunt, who won a hard fought 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory at #2 singles. Says Coach Erickson: "I couldn't be happier with the way that Austin fought and competed today. I think this match has the potential to turn around his season."
"We talked before this match how important it was for us to start fast and jump on them right away to set the tone. I was so pleased to see that happen, as we broke serve right away on every doubles court. The guys competed hard and kept up their intensity, which is what I'm looking for. In singles, things were a little rougher. Albion is a tough place to play due to the speed of the courts, but we did enough today to get the 6-3 win, and I'm happy about that. There is still a lot to take away from this match that we need to work on though."
Cornerstone's next action is over spring break, when they take on Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL.
