The Cornerstone University Golden Eagles baseball team wrapped up its first series of the year in Memphis, Tenn. today by winning two games against Victory University. The Golden Eagles took three of four from Victory on the weekend to move to 3-1 on the season while Victory moved to 1-7.
In game one today, Cornerstone beat Victory 12-2 in a game that was shortened by two innings due to the mercy rule. The Golden Eagles out hit Victory 10-3 on the way to a dominating win.
Sophomore Kyle Marburger started on the mound and earned his first win of the year pitching three innings while giving up one earned run on two hits, six walks, and two strikeouts. Junior Paul Freswick came on in relief with the bases loaded and zero outs in the fourth inning and got out of a jam by inducing a 1-2-3 double play and striking out the next hitter. Freswick went two innings, gave up one hit, and had one strikeout while giving up zero runs.
Sophomore Nick Covello led the offense for the second straight day reaching base four times and going 2-3 with four runs and four RBI. Covello hit his first homerun of the season, a towering grand slam to right field in the third inning. Sophomore Travis Gordon was 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored hitting in lead-off spot. Junior Sonny Mastromatteo was 2-3 while driving in two runs for Cornerstone.
In game two, Cornerstone won 7-2 behind a great pitching outing by junior Luke Heller. Heller started on the mound and earned his first win of the year by pitching five innings giving up one unearned run. Heller gave up four hits and two walks while striking out four. Junior Jon Knapp threw two scoreless innings in relief.
Junior Tommy Enslen led the offense with two hits and an RBI. Gordon reached base three more time and Junior Dillon Reust hit a double and drove in a run. Mastromatteo added two runs and sophomore catcher Davis Martin had an RBI on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt.
The Cornerstone baseball team will leave this Thursday to drive down to Florida for the annual Spring Break trip. They will play nine games in Lakeland and Auburndale, Florida against various teams from the Midwest and Florida. The next scheduled game is a doubleheader against Grace University (Neb.) on February 28 in Lakeland.
