The No. 4 Cornerstone men's basketball team welcomed Lourdes University this afternoon for another WHAC contest. Last time the two teams met was on Jan. 11 as the Golden Eagles needed overtime to beat the Gray Wolves. Today Cornerstone rolled to a 93-60 victory needing no overtime. Following this afternoon, Lourdes falls to 14-14 overall and 9-11 in conference play while the Golden Eagles improve to 25-3 overall and 19-1 during the WHAC season – holding the first place spot in the conference.
Cornerstone grabbed an early six point lead in the first two minutes of play. Back-to-back shots made by Ben Lanning pushed the Golden Eagles ahead by 18 points, their largest lead of the half, as the scoreboard read five minutes. Lourdes would slowly cut into the deficit before half as the Golden Eagles took a 40-27 halftime lead into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles went 15-for-30 from the floor in the first while converting on 4-of-12 from behind the arc. Ben Lanning led all players with 17 points while senior Anthony Allen dished out five assists. Cornerstone outrebounded Lourdes in the first, 24-18, while grabbing five offensive boards. The Golden Eagles also dished out a team total 12 assists and added four blocks.
During the second half Cornerstone found themselves leading by as many as 26 points halfway through the second. Lourdes would get only as close as 20 points behind with 5:39 on the clock. The Golden Eagles were just too strong for the Gray Wolves taking the 33 point win.
During the afternoon Cornerstone shot 50.8 percent from the floor while grabbing a team total 46 rebounds. Ben Lanning led all scorers with 26 while three other Golden Eagles scored in the double-digits. Allen held the game-high eight assists while Lanning grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone clinches the WHAC regular season title out right with the win over Lourdes. Cornerstone is three games up on Davenport with only 2 games left in the regular season. Cornerstone will host all WHAC games as long as they are in the tournament.
With only two more WHAC games left in the regular season, Cornerstone remains first in the conference standings. Up next for the Coach Kim Elder's team will be Aquinas College at home on Wednesday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m.
