The No. 24 Cornerstone women's basketball team hosted another conference game on Saturday afternoon. Lourdes University came to Mol Arena for the second meeting against Cornerstone. The last meeting occurred on January 11 as the Golden Eagles walked away with a 10-point victory. Today the Golden Eagles had a tough battle forcing to sit two starters due to injury and illness.
The Gray Wolves took the early lead on their first position but after a two point shot made by CU's Jill Stenenwyk the Golden Eagles tied the game. Cornerstone grabbed their first lead of the game at the 18:16 mark. Lourdes University would take a 20-8 run and a 11 point lead with seven minutes until the half. The Golden Eagles would slowly chip away at the deficit and taking the one-point lead with just 1:24 left on the clock. The lead would not last long as Lourdes' Tiffany Scott converted at the free throw line with seconds remaining as the Gray Wolves took the 29-28 halftime advantage.
Tanner Hostetler led all Golden Eagle players with eight points while Teigan Mitcham followed closely behind with six. Ashley Niedermayer grabbed four rebounds in the first half for Cornerstone. In the second, Cornerstone picked up their game taking a 40-33 lead four minutes after the break. Lourdes would pull within one with 12:21 on the scoreboard but again the Golden Eagles pushed the lead with nine minutes remaining to seven. With 4:40 to play in the game, Lourdes' Tiffany Scott evened the score at 53-53. The game was setting up to be a nail bitter. With time winding down, Ashley Niedermayer went to the line for the Golden Eagles hitting one of two giving CU a one point advantage. The Gray Wolves pushed the ball down the court with 40 seconds remaining and Emily Orsini drove through the lane to get an easy layup. Cornerstone was forced to call a timeout with 13 seconds to play. Shelby Peterson grabbed the offensive rebound off a missed Golden Eagle shot and was fouled. At the line, Peterson sealed the win hitting both shots as Cornerstone played tough defense in the remaining 10 seconds winning 61-60.
