The Golden Eagles travelled over to Aquinas to play the first of two games in a two week period. The Saints will return the game to Cornerstone on the 19th of February. Cornerstone started well going back and forth with the Saints. The two teams tied six times over the first eight minutes of play. Jill Hendricks made a two point shot and was fouled at 11:54 to tie the game at 14-14 and gave Cornerstone a 15-14 lead on the foul shot. Ashley Niedermayer increased the lead to 17-14 on a put back at 9:56. Then things went south for the Golden Eagles. Aquinas made a 24-4 run over the next five minutes to go up 38-21. The Saints took their largest lead of the half on their last basket of the half to go into the locker-room up 49-27. The Golden Eagles outscored the Saints 37-29 in the second half but the two teams played fairly even for most of the second half. Cornerstone made the last 8 points of the game in the last minute and a half to get the deficit down to 14 (78-64). Jill Hendrickson led the Golden Eagles with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Cornerstone drops to 12-5 in the WHAC and is still in 2nd place.
KEY TEAM STATS
The Golden Eagles shot just 28.1% (9-32) including 0 for 7 from beyond the arc in the first half of play while the Saints made 51.4% (18-35) from the field. Allison Heberlein made 6 of 11 shots from long range while Cornerstone made just 6 of 24 for the game.
The Golden Eagles will host Concordia on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
