The Golden Eagles hosted a hot Siena Heights team tonight in a crucial WHAC contest. Siena Heights came into the game on a 10 game winning streak. The Saints made the first basket of the game but Cornerstone recaptured the lead and went up 8-4 on a 3-pointer by Tanner Hostetler at 16:31. The Saints came back to tie the score at 8-8 at 15:04. The teams were tied again at 14-14 and 17-17 before Siena Heights took their largest lead of the half at 24-19 with 6:46 left in the half. Jill Steenwyk and Katelyn Cousins made back to back 3-pointers to give Cornerstone a brief lead at 5:52. Siena Heights reclaimed the lead at 5.27 and kept it until 2:23 when Tanner Hostetler drained another 3-pointer to tie the game at 30-30. The Saints went back up briefly but Katelyn Cousins tied the game at 33-33 with just :03 seconds left. The Saints got off a shot but missed as the clock ran out so they went into the locker room deadlocked at 33. The Saints came out and made their first shot of the second half at 19:40 and then kept the lead until 15:08. Jill Steenwyk tied the game at 44-44 with a two pointer and the Golden Eagles took the lead on a Katelyn Cousins 3-pointer at 14:31. Katelyn Cousins and Jill Steenwyk drained a couple of 3's as the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to nine (55-46) with 13:01 left in the half. Cornerstone retained the lead for the next eight minutes but the Saints kept the score close throughout and they went back ahead (63-62) at 4:32. The teams traded lead a few times before SHU tied it at 67-all and 68-all with 1:59 remaining with the first of two foul shots. The Saints made the 2nd foul shot to take the lead but Ashley Niedermayer made a layup to give Cornerstone a 70-69 lead. Siena Heights missed their shot and fouled Katelyn Cousin and she converted both shots to make it 72-69. Niedermayer then blocked an SHU shots and the Saints were forced to foul and Cousins sank two more foul shots to seal the 74-69 victory for the Golden Eagles. Cousins finished the game with 25 points and 5 assists.
KEY TEAM STATS
Siena Heights shot 41.3% from the field but only 16% (4 of 25) from long range while Cornerstone shot 37.7% from the floor but the Golden Eagles made 8 of 22 (36.6%) from long range. The two teams were even on the boards with 38 rebounds each. Both teams shot well from the foul line as well. Siena Heights made 13 of 14 from the line while Cornerstone made 20 of 24 from the charity stripe.
Cornerstone goes across town to play #3 ranked Davenport on Saturday for a 1:00 tip-off. Davenport's only loss of the season so far came at the hands of the Golden Eagles in their first game.
