The Golden Eagles hosted Northwestern in a crucial WHAC contest tonight with both teams entering the game tied for 3rd place with a 7-3 record. Cornerstone lost the first game to the Racers 62-60 down in Lima. Both teams seem to be similar in a lot of ways and match up pretty evenly. The Golden Eagles took the lead early and went up 14-6 about 8 ½ minutes into the contest when Taylor Dean drained a 3-pointer at 11:18. The Racers responded with a 10-2 run over the next 3 ½ minutes to tie the game at 16-16. Northwestern Ohio hit a 3-pointer to take their first lead at 6:47 but Cornerstone came back to reclaim the lead (22-21) at 4:33. Tanner Hostetler gave the Golden Eagles a 4 point (29-25) lead with 1:39 left but the Racers scored the last basket of the half to go into the locker room down just 29-27. Cornerstone made a 7-2 run to start the second half to open up a 36-29 lead at 18:18. The Racers came right back and reclaimed the lead 38-37 with 15:45 left in the half. The teams tied at 39-39 before Cornerstone made a 13-4 run to take a 9 point (52-43) lead at 6:34. Cornerstone kept up the pressure and maintained their lead down the stretch. Ashley Niedermayer made a couple of big baskets sandwiched in between two free throws by Janae Trombley and two free throws by Tanner Hostetler as the Golden Eagles went on to defeat the Racers 61-48 in the game. Cornerstone improves to 8-3 in the WHAC and 13-5 overall.
KEY TEAM STATS
Cornerstone didn't shoot great (43.5%) in the second half but the limited Northwestern Ohio to just (24.1%) as they extended their lead through the half. The Racers won the battle of the boards 38-36.
Cornerstone will travel over to Detroit to take on Marygrove on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
