GAME FLOW

The No. 10 Cornerstone men's basketball team traveled to Sylvania, Ohio, this afternoon to face conference opponent Lourdes University.  Last year the two teams met twice during the conference season as the Golden Eagles rolled through both contests.  History repeated itself today as Cornerstone took the overtime thriller, 76-71.  The Golden Eagles are now 9-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference as the Gray Wolves fall to 6-4 in conference play.

After an 8-0 run by Cornerstone in the first three minutes of play, Lourdes was able to chip away at the deficit slowly.  At the 11:18 mark, the Golden Eagles held the minimal one point advantage.  However, Cornerstone would play tough offensively and defensively taking their largest lead of the half with 1:44 to play with the score 30-18.  The Gray Wolves were able to hit three free throws down the stretch as the teams went into the half with a score of 30-21 in favor of Cornerstone.  During the first, Cornerstone had 12 points in the paint but Lourdes held the bench scoring advantage, 11-3.

The second half looked as if the Golden Eagles would roll to an easy victory after leading by 14 points with 16 minutes to play.  However, the Gray Wolves would not go away easily cutting the lead to one point with just two minutes remaining in regulation.  After both teams coughed the ball over, Lourdes held the possession with thirty seconds remaining.  Gray Wolf, Elvin Butler, tied the game after capitalizing on one of two free throws with 28 seconds left.  Golden Eagle, Wes Hudson, had the chance to be the hero with four seconds remaining but was unable to connect on his shot as the teams went into overtime.

During overtime, Cornerstone played strong jumping out to a five point advantage half way through extra minutes.  With 1:24 remaining, the Golden Eagles increased the lead to seven after a pair of free throws by Ben Lanning.  Cornerstone was able to hold off a late surge by the Gray Wolves taking the exciting overtime road victory by five.
