The Cornerstone men's basketball team hosted conference opponent, Madonna University, on Saturday afternoon. The game was Cornerstone's sixth WHAC game of the 2013-14 season. Last year, the two teams met twice with Madonna having their way in both. Today the Golden Eagles had revenge after taking a 15 point lead at the half en route to a 91-75 advantage for the home team. After the win, Cornerstone advances to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in WHAC play. Madonna falls to 7-5 overall and drop their first conference game of the season and hold a 5-1 conference record.
During the first half the Golden Eagles took the two point lead after Jake Plite scored in the paint off of a Madonna turnover. CU would pull ahead by seven at the 15 minute mark when Ben Lanning sunk a shot in the paint after grabbing his own rebound. Cornerstone would remain ahead throughout the half and would grab their largest lead of 17 after Ty Mason put in a layup after another Madonna turnover.
Wes Hudson would hit back-to-back three pointers to begin the second to put the Golden Eagles ahead by 21 points. Cornerstone would add to their lead and at the 7:11 mark they would tally their largest lead, 85-54, after back-to-back three's from Cory Cox and Anthony Allen. Madonna would slowly chip away at the lead but the Golden Eagles were too strong finishing the game, 91-75.
Cornerstone's Ben Lanning led all players with 26 points during the afternoon while Madonna's Bobby Naubert followed closely behind adding 22 points. For the game, the Golden Eagles shot 46.9% from the court while Madonna shot at a high percentage as well (40.6%). Anthony Allen dished out nine assists for CU while Jake Plite grabbed eight rebounds including five defensive and three offensive.
The Golden Eagles will take a break from conference competition and host non-conference opponent, Kuyper College, on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Mol Arena. Cornerstone holds a perfect 7-0 record against the Cougars with their recent win coming last year as they rolled to a dominant 109-66 win.
