The Cornerstone women's basketball team hosted the (RV) Madonna Crusaders on Saturday afternoon for sixth Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game of the season. After keeping the Crusaders scoreless through the first 12 minutes of play, the Golden Eagles would roll to a 89-72 victory. After the day, Cornerstone advances to 7-4 overall and 4-2 during WHAC play. Madonna falls to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Jill Hendrickson and Ashley Niedermayer both recorded a double-double on the day. Hendrickson had 20 points and 15 rebounds while Niedermayer added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Four other Golden Eagles were able to notch double digits in the point category.
During the first half, Cornerstone would play strong on both sides of the court going on a 21-0 run in the first 12 minutes. The Crusaders would eventually get on the board after a defensive foul put Madonna's Rachel Melcher to the free throw line. Madonna would go on a bit of a run to pull within seven, 27-20, as the clock read 3:22. The Golden Eagles would extend the lead en route to a 40-24 score at the half. The second half was once again dominated by CU led by Hendrickson's 13 points in the half.
KEY TEAM STATS
The Golden Eagles shot 42.9% from the field while holding Madonna to a 36.5 shooting percentage. Cornerstone would dominate the boards out rebounding their opponent, 66-33. CU would also add 20 assists and 11 steals.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Dearborn, Mich., to face the Wolverines from UM-Dearborn. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. Last year the two teams faced twice as each team was able to take a victory on the road. Cornerstone is 16-1 overall against the Wolverines.
