Cornerstone got back to WHAC play tonight as they travelled down to Southfield to take on the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech. The host got off to a quick start making baskets on their first three possessions to take a 6-1 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a 9-4 run to tie the score at 10-10 with 14:35 on the clock. Cornerstone then made an 11-6 run over the next 5 ½ minutes to take a 21-15 lead but the Blue Devils would make a run to finish the half with a 30-26 lead at the half. The Golden Eagles would open the second half with a 11-7 run to tie the score at 37-37 with 14:31 on the clock. Cornerstone turned up the pressure and outscored Lawrence Tech 14-1 over the next six minutes to take a 51-38 lead with 8:22 on the clock. The Blue Devils would get the lead down to 10 (48-58) with 4:26 left in the game but that would be as close as they would get and Cornerstone would go on to defeat Lawrence Tech 66-50 to improve to 3-2 in WHAC play and 6-4 overall. Katelyn Cousins led all players with 23 points while Jill Hendrickson followed closely behind adding 19 for CU. Hendrickson also grabbed 15 rebounds for the Golden Eagles while Jill Steenwyk added three blocks on the night.
KEY TEAM STATS
The Golden Eagles shot 39% from the field compared to the Blue Devils shooting 35.3% during the game. Cornerstone was able to force 20 turnovers while grabbing 42 rebounds compared to their opponent's 34 total rebounds. The Golden Eagles also added nine assists, 13 steals and seven blocks.
The Golden Eagles will host another conference game on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena. The Madonna Crusaders (RV) will face Cornerstone for a 1 p.m. tip off. Last year the two teams faced three times with the Crusaders ending the Golden Eagles' season in the WHAC Quarterfinal.
