The No. 3 seed Cornerstone volleyball team swept Siena Heights in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference quarterfinal on Friday night. The Golden Eagles move on to the WHAC semifinals tomorrow to face the No. 7 seed Lourdes University for a 12:30 p.m. match at Madonna University. Cornerstone advances to 26-10 overall.
During set one, both teams were tied at 11 until the Golden Eagles went on a 14-4 run winning set one 25-15 over Siena Heights. Cornerstone hit at a .321 pace while Siena Heights attacked with a .029 percentage.
Siena Heights gave the Golden Eagle squad a much tougher time in the second set but Cornerstone was able to break the 17-17 tie after a crucial Siena Heights ball handling error and would finish strong en route to a 25-21 victory.
In the third and final set, the score was in favor of the Golden Eagles throughout the match as Cornerstone finished the game 25-18 after a Murphy Heyer kill.
For the match, Cornerstone hit .279 in earning 44 kills while Siena Heights posted 29 kills at a .085 pace. Cornerstone tallied a team 47 digs and served up four aces.
Chelsea Lake led the Golden Eagles with 14 kills while Cailie Johnson followed behind with nine during the win. Kim Weaver dished out 38 assists while Abby Miedema helped out defensively with 16 digs.
If the Golden Eagles defeat Lourdes they will move on to the WHAC finals which will be played on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Madonna University
