KEY TEAM STATS
The Golden Eagles shot 34.8% from the field compared to the Eagles from Robert Morris shooting 33.3% during the game. Cornerstone dominated the glass grabbing 63 rebounds compared to Robert Morris' 36 total rebounds. The Golden Eagles also added 18 total assists, six steals and eight blocks.
The Cornerstone women's basketball team headed down to Hammond, Ind., to participate in the Purdue Calumet Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game against Robert Morris was the season opener for both teams. Last year, the two teams met during the tournament with Robert Morris taking the 65-64 victory. This year Cornerstone had their revenge winning 71-68 led by senior Katelyn Cousins' career-high 30 points.
During the first half, Robert Morris maintained momentum throughout as the Golden Eagles were unable to take the lead. With thirteen minutes remaining in the first, Jill Hendrickson's layup in the paint helped Cornerstone pull within three points. However, Robert Morris would ride into halftime with a twelve point advantage (37-25). The Golden Eagles shot a mere 26.3% compared to Robert Morris shooting 39.5%.
The second half was the complete opposite from the first as Cornerstone dominated the momentum outscoring their opponents 46-31 and shooting at a strong 45.2 percentage during the second half. The Golden Eagles took the lead after Cousins sunk a three pointer with seven minutes left on the clock. The score would go back and forth throughout the remainder of the game and with 22 seconds left the score was tied once again. Ashley Niedermayer went to the line converting on one of two to give CU the one point lead. Robert Morris could not convert on their free throws with seven seconds remaining as the Golden Eagles grabbed the rebound. Sophomore Jill Steenwyk was fouled and made both her free throws to seal the three point lead and Cornerstone's season opener victory.
The Golden Eagles will face No. 21 Purdue University Calumet tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in Hammond, Ind., to wrap-up the tournament. Last year the two teams faced each other as Cornerstone took the 85-81 decision.
