The No. 21 Cornerstone volleyball squad pairs up with crosstown rivals Aquinas College for the Aquinas / Cornerstone Classic this weekend. Day one occurred on Friday evening with the Golden Eagles defeating Spring Arbor University and Grace College (Ind.) to advance their overall record, 22-9.
The first match of the day occurred at 5 p.m. facing Spring Arbor while the final score 3-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles (25-14, 25-17, 25-10). Seniors Kim Weaver and Abby Miedema aided in the win as Weaver dished out 30 assists while Miedema added 16 digs. Weaver also added 2 aces and 3 blocks including two solo and one assisted. Libby Webber helped out offensively adding the team high nine kills.
The last game of the day occurred at 8 p.m. with Cornerstone defeating Grace College from Indiana, 3-0. The squad played strong both offensively and defensivly to take the victory. After three sets, Cornerstone attacked at a .302 pace while keeping their opponents to a mere .041 attacking percentage. Senior Becky Albrecht led the way this time adding 12 kills while Cailie Johnson added nine attacking at a .467 individual percentage. Once again, Miedema added 17 kills while Megan Petrick and Chelsea Lake added 11 apiece. Weaver dished out the game-high 35 digs as well.
Up next for the Cornerstone volleyball squad will be today, Oct. 26, during day two of the Aquinas / Cornerstone Classic. The Golden Eagles will face Goshen College at 10 a.m. and Mount Vernon Nazarene at 1 p.m.
