After heading to St. Louis, Mo., on Thursday, Oct. 10, the Cornerstone volley team faced No. 19 Grand View University and No. 17 Missouri Baptist College during day one of the Missouri Baptist Tournament on Friday. The Golden Eagle squad defeated both NAIA ranked teams in five sets to advance them to 15-9 overall.
During the first match of the night, the Golden Eagles defeated Grand View (23-25, 26-24, 27-25, 18-25, 17-15) led by Chelsea Lake (13), Cailie Johnson (12) and Kim Weaver (11) digs. Lake added 24 digs during the match while Abby Miedema added 21 digs to help Cornerstone. Libby Webber helped out defensively with three assisted and two solo blocks during the first match. The Golden Eagles attacked their best during the final set at a .318 pace while keeping Grand View to a .292 percentage during the fifth set.
After the upset during the first match of the day, Cornerstone looked to repeat the success during the second match against the host team, No. 17 Missouri Baptist College. With the match going to five sets, the Golden Eagles were able to take the upset again (25-20, 26-24, 30-32, 21-25, 15-9). After winning the first two sets, Missouri Baptist bounced back to take sets three and four. However Cornerstone regained momentum with a 15-9 victory in the final set. Johnson helped out with 22 kills while lake added 19 kills. Weaver dished out 67 assists to aid in the victory while six Golden Eagles were in double-digit figures for digs with Lake (20) leading the way.
Up next for the Cornerstone volleyball squad will be tomorrow during day two of the Missouri Baptist Tournament. The Golden Eagles will face No. 22 Columbia College at 11 a.m. (EST) and Friends University at 2 p.m. (EST).
