Friday night, the Cornerstone (RV) volleyball squad returned to action to host WHAC opponent, #4 Madonna University. After winning the first two sets from the nationally ranked opponent, the Golden Eagles were unable to come away with the win. After the loss, Cornerstone is now 10-9 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Golden Eagles began the match strong winning the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-21. Cornerstone held the advantage in total kills and attacking percentage over the Crusaders in both sets. The squad attacked at their best pace during the second set (.324) compared to Madonna's attacking percentage of .189 during set two.
Heading into the third set, the Crusaders of Madonna University began to take momentum. From the first point of the set, Madonna maintained the lead riding a 23-25 lead. In the fourth set, the Crusaders continued strong play with a 14-23 lead. However, the Golden Eagles would not let Madonna take the set easily going on a 6-0 run making the score 20-23. Madonna would not let Cornerstone get any closer and took the fourth set 25-20.
The fifth set proved to be a real nail-biter with the score swaying back-and-fourth. With the score 14-13 in favor of Madonna, the match point went back-and-fourth across the net many times but after a kill my Kayla Vogel the No. 4 Madonna Crusaders took the set and match.
Leading the Way
Chelsea Lake led the Golden Eagles with 14 kills while Cailie Johnson added 13 and Johanna Egerer helped out with 11 kills. Kim Weaver dished out 48 assists during the match. Three Cornerstone players were in double-digit figures in the dig category including Abby Miedema (21), Lake (18) and Weaver (15).
Cornerstone (RV) will host Aquinas College for their annual "Night of Nets" and "80's Night" for another WHAC competition on Wednesday, October 2.
