The Golden Eagles hosted Concordia for their WHAC opener today and they came away with a 1-0 victory.  Cornerstone pressed the Cardinals from the beginning of the game.  The Golden Eagles outshot the Cardinals 8-3 in the first half of play.  The turning point in the game came about 12 minutes into the second half.  Cornerstone had been attacking the Concordia goal and had a couple of shots narrowly miss but then a header by Mario Williams was saved off the line by a field player with his hands.  The player was shown a red card and Cornerstone was awarded a penalty kick.  Williams stepped up and buried a shot in the upper left corner of the goal to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead.  The Golden Eagles continued to press the Cardinals but they couldn't find the back of the net.  They outshot Concordia 14-3 in the second half.  Cornerstone just couldn't make the final pass for an easy goal.  Concordia did have one counter attack the forced Miguel Cervantes to make an acrobatic save to push the ball over the crossbar.  Cornerstone had multiple attacks that looked to be very promising in the second half.  Nate Weflen came in and had a great opportunity.  He beat his defender in the box, cut the ball towards the end line and hit a left footed shot that beat the Cardinal GK but another defender made a spectacular play to clear the ball before it crossed the line.  Cornerstone improved to 5-2, 1-0 on the season with the win.  The Golden Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they travel over to Aquinas to take on the Saints.  Aquinas is currently 7-0 and 1-0 in the WHAC.
