Cornerstone University's volleyball head coach, Ryan Campbell, reached his 100th career program win last night when the squad faced Lourdes University for their 2013 conference season opener.
Getting to Know the Coach
Coach Campbell is in his fifth season as head coach and eighth season coaching at Cornerstone. Last season, Ryan led the team to an overall 24-10 record and a 21st NAIA National Ranking. In 2009, Campbell was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) "Champions of Character" coach and organized the Cornerstone volleyball attendance record. Also in 2009, Campbell received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) "Thirty Under 30 Award," a national honor give to thirty up-and-coming volleyball coaches.
2013 Season So Far
Heading into the 2013 campaign Ryan held a 94-57 record during his four years at Cornerstone. Campbell took his team out to California and Utah to begin the season. The team had a tough challenge facing five nationally recognized opponents during their nine games out west. The nationally ranked opponents included Concordia University (1), Biola University (4), The Master's College (9), Westmont College (16) and Vanguard University (RV). Unfortunately after the nine-game trip, the Golden Eagles began their season 2-9 overall. Cornerstone's two wins came against Olivet Nazarene University and Hope International University.
Returning home in September, the Cornerstone volleyball squad began to have much success in the mid-west. Campbell and the Golden Eagles headed to Aquinas College for a non-conference match-up on Sept. 10. Cornerstone took the 3-1 victory against the host team and since then the Golden Eagles are on a four-game win streak. The Golden Eagles swept IU-South Bend (3-0) Grace Bible (3-0) on their home court on Sept. 13 and recently won their conference season opener Wednesday night against Lourdes University (3-1). The conference win gives Coach Campbell an overall 100-64 record since taking over the program.
After Wednesday night's win, the Golden Eagles are 6-7 overall and 1-0 during WHAC play. Cornerstone will head to Bourbonnais, Ill., this weekend for the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Friday and Saturday. The squad will have another challenge when they face Georgetown College (8) and Viterbo (17) on Friday at 5 p.m. (EST) and 7 p.m. (EST). On Saturday the Golden Eagles will take on Trinity Christian at 11 a.m. (EST) and Campbellsville University at 2 p.m. (EST).
After the upcoming weekend, the Golden Eagles will dive into conference matches besides their Missouri Baptist Tournament on Oct. 11 & 12. and the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic on Oct. 25 & 26. The team that has proven to be the top WHAC competitor so far has been Madonna University who is currently ranked number four in the NAIA. Cornerstone will host the Crusaders on Sept. 27 for a 7 p.m. match.
