Wednesday night, the Golden Eagles' volleyball squad returned to action to face WHAC competitor, Lourdes University, for their conference opener. After a 3-1 victory at Lourdes (25-18-25-9, 23-25, 25-16), Cornerstone is now on a four-game win streak. Last week the Golden Eagles went a perfect 3-0 with wins against Aquinas College (non-conference), IU-South Bend and Grace Bible College. The squad is now 6-7 overall and 1-0 in the conference while Lourdes falls to 7-5 overall and 0-2 during conference play.
After the Golden Eagles took an early 4-1 lead in the first set of the match on Wednesday night, the Gray Wolves bounced back keeping the score close. With the score 16-15 in favor of the home team, Cornerstone went on a 10-3 run rendering the final score 25-18 to give the Golden Eagles the first set. Cornerstone totaled a team-high 16 kills during the first set compared to Lourdes' six.
Cornerstone continued their momentum into the second set with a 25-9 victory over the Gray Wolves. The Golden Eagles controlled the set on the defensive and offensive side as they were able to attack at a .259 pace while keeping their opponents to a -.318 percentage.
The third set went in favor to Lourdes University 25-23. After an early lead by the Gray Wolves, Cornerstone slowly chipped away at the score. With the score even at 23 Stephanie Richards put Lourdes ahead by one and then took the set on the next point.
Cornerstone bounced back taking a commanding 25-16 fourth and final set of the match. The Golden Eagles began to pull away from their opponents after a strong 13-5 run midway through the set to give them the 23-14 advantage. After an error on Lourdes' Sam Dibert and a kill by Megan Newhouse, Cornerstone took the set and match.
Leading the Way
Cailie Johnson held the game-high 14 kills while Chelsea Lake tallied 11 and Megan Newhouse added nine kills. Two Golden Eagles were in double-digit figures in the dig category with senior Abby Miedema leading the way with 20 digs and Lake adding 13. Johnson had five blocks while Weaver totaled 39 assists. Lake chipped in with three aces respectively as well.
Cornerstone will head to Bourbonnais, Ill., to participate in the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Sept. 20 and 21. Friday the Golden Eagles will face No. 8 Georgetown College at 5 p.m. (EST) and no. 17 Viterbo University at 7 p.m. (EST). Trinity Christian and Campbellsville University will be the opponents on Saturday with game times at 11 a.m. (EST) and 2 p.m. (EST).
